Cause they weren't able to secure it...
Even that plan of theirs was flawed. Plants are still not flowing at a rate in which they were before the war (though they are very close to even now). Course, that's five years of demand later.
Hey, it was either to help the worlds oil supply, to get Cheney rich, or to seal a vendetta against Saddam.
Those are the only three choices left. No WMD's, no terrorists (at least before) and I'll laugh at anyone who agrees it was just because the U.S. wanted to help out the citizens of Iraq (which given current circumstances, they made worse anyway).
So you take you pick of the three. My opinion is, it was a little of each.
