I can't help but be annoyed at the Mayor's anger at the possibility of the school handing out birth control/contraceptives. Kids know about sex. By about 12 years old (probably estimating high) kids know what sex is and are curious about it. Chances are no matter what a parent does to try to stop it, they're going to try it, they're going to experiment.

So half of these 17 girls were STUPID and made an idiotic pact--but on the other hand, 8-10 of them got pregnant unexpectedly, most likely, and guess what? Chances are if there were readily available birth control pills/condoms, probably half of those 8-10 wouldn't have gotten pregnant.

I get that they're your kids and all, but I've never understood the idea of blindly ignoring reality and acting as if by NOT teaching kids about sex, and NOT giving options of birth control, they're magically never going to think about or have sex.

The Times article is old... apparently there was no pact.

http://news.bostonherald.com/news/re...ome&position=0

Looks like Time blew the story up a bit. First went from none of the girls being available for an interview, then the story says half confessed, then later on radio, the author says she spoke to only a few.

Is this better? If this is the truth then it went from a bunch of people making a conscious (somewhat silly) choice to get pregnant to a place where 17 girls got pregnant, all under the age of 16. I'm really not sure which is worse.

Although, this could be some way of insuring that the men involved have to have some responsibility for their actions in this as well, as it could be argued with all of this pact stuff that they were tricked and thereby absolved of their portion of the responsibility.

On a somewhat related note:

http://www.edmontonsun.com/News/Colu...79646-sun.html

"There are two certainties when it comes to sex. The Catholic Church will continue insisting that hanky-panky belongs only within a marriage, and teens - no matter what their religious persuasion - will continue to have sex anyway. "

"Because of budget cuts, there was no sex education in the high school in Gloucester, Mass., a predominantly Catholic, economically depressed town. That worked well, didn't it? So much for the notion that if you keep teens in the dark about sex, they won't fumble around in the dark. "

Now call me crazy, but for some reason I doubt that the state was running a lot of interference in parent's rights to discipline their children in a rural fishing village.

My guess is that Catholic-dominated hamlets in Massachusetts are fairly conservative places. So, while it is fun to blame just about everything on lefties, commies, liberals, socialists and other vermin, I just don't think we can pin this one on them.
