With this last update, some people (people being individuals into Diablo a heck of a lot more than I ever was) are saying that the runes look like "Shael" and "Hel" runes from Diablo 2.

Why does it have to be an existing property? Is Blizzard not allowed to make an original game anymore?

For some reason, cracking blue ice doesn't really scream 'Diablo' to me.

Sure they can make new stuff. That would be great! However, in terms of a random splash page it is far easier to speculate that it is either something to do with Wrath of the Lich King (due to the ice) or Diablo (based on the runes and other information floating around) because we already have the information about these franchises. If it is not these two things, I have no idea what it could possibly be.

As for ice not being very Diablo-ish, the story has spanned gothic villages, hell, swamps, rain forests, deserts, MC Esher type mazes and large mountain ranges all with crazy things jumping out of every nook and cranny. I don't see it as unreasonable to think that an ancient evil (there are still a few lesser Evils unaccounted for) is locked up in a sheet of ice.

Whatever it is, I eagerly await the announcement because Blizzard makes awesome games. Which I will get to play in around 2013.

Well, the background is named "ice2.jpg". Given that and it's decidedly frost theme, I think the speculation that it's related to the WoW expansion "Wrath of the Lich King" is probably correct.

They havn't released many details about the expansion yet, and by all accounts they have less then half a year before it launches (nothing announced...) I'm guessing they are going to launch a more indepth preview of the expansion, public test realms and all that relatively soon.

Right now there is tonnes of preview information on the WoW website, far more information than is available for SCII. There is probably even more sitting around in the WoW forums. The only thing,
as you mentioned, that they haven't talked about is a release date and if this is a splash page just for a release date and beta information for something they already have loads of info on I will be sorely disappointed.

I worry that you may be right though.

It is usually closer to 2-3 years from announcement to release and gamers given them leeway because they are arguably the best game developer out there.
