The 323 will be faster than a router with a drive attached because the USB interface is slow, while the 323 is SATA direct to the network.

I forgot to mention about the mirroring capability of the 323, it's great to have because it's never a matter of if a drive is going to fail, it's always a matter of when...

I use the 323 as my main backup device for my home computers as well as the main drive for photos, business documents, etc, so if a drive ever fails my data is still there. Short of two drives failing or the enclosure being destroyed...

Its the type of connection the Harddrives use...

Instead of IDE type drives, they are SATA type drives.
