My parents always told me never to get them anything for Mother's or Father's Day because they always scoffed at what they called "Hallmark Holidays." Still, I send them a card every year just to let them know I'm thinking of them.
Also, my Dad gets a kick when I periodically send him an e-card from http://www.someecards.com as he's got a good sense of humour. So I'm going to find an appropriate one now.

Personally, I hate cards unless they're ones that have been made by your kids. Four bucks for a piece of paper that'll never be looked at again and either be thrown in the trash or cluttering up the house.

I got a sweater, a t-shirt and a canister so I'm allowed to keep my coffee on the counter now.

Got my dad a benchtop toolchest so that he can finally organize his tools (he's retiring this year). Went over and had tea with my parents.
I got a nice card that my 7 y/o made for me (a keeper for sure), and both the boys "got" me a very nice new tie.

Took my dad golfing today, first really nice sunny day out here in about a month. The best part of my game were the beers afterwards, and seeing Gino Odjick out on the course.

Went with my Dad and stepfather to Gaucho's by MacLeod for lunch, my stepsisters came as well, it was awesome and the food there is fantastic.
Then I hung out with my son and watched the US Open, then we had a nap. It was awesome. Not a bad first Father's Day, definitely something I could get used to!

Got my papa a good ol' Sherwood PMP 5030 (he swears their the best stick ever made, and I may have to agree with him on that) so he would quit stealing my hockey sticks. Had to go through an entire rack of the bastids though to find the straightest blade of the bunch.

So you get him a drill and he gets you drilled? Nice!
I got my Dad a phone call. We talk every week pretty much though so it's nothing new. We are very open with each other so I don't have to go out of my way to let him know how I feel about him today, he knows. I make it very clear on a regular basis.
As for me, I got dinner and a movie!
Hopefully someday soon we won't be 1700 miles apart and we can go play golf or go fishing. Have a family cookout. I miss those things being isolated from my family.

It does suck when family is so far away.
My sister and the kids live in Denver and my brother and his wife are in Minneapolis. I miss not being able to spend more time with them.
My late father and i used to golf a lot and now that he's gone it's not quite the same. My advice is don't put off plans that could have you spending time with your dad. Mine died at age 66 and i miss him dearly.

Gift card to golf town for my pops.
To make up for the golf balls someone stole out of our garage last week...even though they were free, and he has like 200 more, he was still mad.

You would not believe how frequently that exact point comes up between my wife and I when discussing our future plans. Financially, it's a precarious situation as we live in what is quite possibly the metro area with the lowest cost of living in the US. We need to go back to one of the highest. That requires a lot of equity and we ain't got it. At some point, though, I'm going to say F it and do it. I've always landed on my feet and I can do it again.
Sorry for your loss man. It's something I don't want to even think about in my life.

I got a kick butt hedge trimmer. I think it was more of a hint from my wife though.

Thanks for the kind words.
Mine died from Colon Cancer back in 2000. It hit me hard as if i'd been sucker punched. Even harder was watching him say good bye to all his friends and relatives. All were a basket case when they left for the final time. He even sat down with a minister and planned his own funeral. Gained a huge amount of respect for him during the last 7 months of his life.

I hear ya. Mine packed it in at 58. He came home from a walk to the store two blocks away complaining of short breath and we had his funeral 3 months later. Perfectly fit before that.
Learned alot from that chapter. Sounds cliche but live everyday as if it is your last.
Today I took the family to Racecity to see the Drag Races. The kids loved it. They had all kinds of cars running, alcohol, nitro, jet, it was awesome.
I can't do things with my Dad anymore but I can sure can with my little guys!!
It's a great day!!!!

Sorry about your dad man.
Yeah i learned a similar lesson myself when my father passed away. Now i live life to it's fullest and never take friends and family for granted. I keep better contact with those around me and tell them often how much i love them.

yeah today was hard for me because my dad lives in calgary and i live in san jose. he's recently been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer even though hes not a smoker. he's a trooper, eating well and still has his sense of humor. he's gone through 3 rounds of chemo and over 20 days of radiation thus far...and he's still smiling and staying strong. my admiration and respect for him has grown so much.
i know he's going to beat it! He's strong. Still, I wish I couldve spent today with him..its hard being far away knowing that he has cancer. I was just there 3 weeks ago and another 2 weeks before that...so I couldnt afford to go. But ill go again in another month.
But luckily, he wasnt alone because my mom and brother were there..and my sis flew in from Chicago.
I think more than anything, people appreciate time spent with them. Sure, they might want certain gadgets etc, but if you look back months and years later, its the time spent that counts, not the materialistic things.
I love you daddy!
