I've driven the Anthony Henday in Edmonton a few times, and I can say that road is a lot busier than I would have expected. I think, however, it has more to do with the facts that Edmonton has no north-south road worth a damn, and most traffic trying to avoid Edmonton doesn't want to go North anyway. (oooh, Morinville!) They want to go West (Grande Prairie) or East (Fort MacMurray). In those situations, that road is a godsend.
From Calgary's perspective, I would expect the North half to be the busier route, with people north wanting to head to Banff, or east. If you are heading north/south, Deerfoot will remain the best route, possibly excluding rush hour.
In the south, I know that going from Cranston to Westhills is a pain in the behind. The ring road would fix that up easily.
