I find all hd signals have a volume level that forces me to up the sound on my system a fair amount ... but if a non-hd commercial comes on you'd better hold on to your damn hat.

It's not only the commercials but different chanels as well. When I watch a higher chanel on Shaw digital like a movie on Channel 55 I have to crank the volume way up. Then when I switch to a lower chanel the speakers almost blow! Why can't all channels have the same volume output.
But I especially hate loud commercials as well.

Then the commercial uses it's max allowable volume and the contrast causes you to leap out of the lazyboy and kick the TV right off the stand.

I don't know how or why they do this. There is nothing more annoying than the freakishly loud commercial. Start the petition, diss, I'll be the first one to sign.
Commercials are broadcast 30% louder than normal programming and have been compressed so that they are the same volume for the entire 15 or 30 or 60 second block. This way when you get up to get a snack/piss/vacuum or whatever you still hear the ad.

Shows have dynamic range, meaning that the quiet parts are actually quieter than the loud parts (unlike a Green Day album, and the Rogers ads).

Led Zeppelin albums are cool because of this.

The CRTC's Fact Sheet for sound levels and the loudness of commercials. According to them:

Ongoing difficulties with audio levels should be reported to the programming service involved, as well to company who delivers the signal to your home. Ask the programming service to check the audio levels being fed to its transmitter, taking care to note the specific date and time of occurrence and the program or commercial involved.
The FCC has the same message. The problem is that both the programming service as well as your cable company don't give a tin about the complaints, Rogers commercials are the loudest by far so they are obviously in favour of this b.s. This is an issue the CRTC and the FCC has to address and they keep shirking their responsibility to the public.

Well some commercials are fine, they stay at the same level while others would blow the hair off a wooden indian! Why can't they write a law that all programming is broadcast at the same levels. I can just imagine some poor guy with a hearing impaired device turned up so he can hear his wife and all of the sudden..BLAM...

What an awesome thread!

I was just thinking the same thing last nite. I've only started to realize this now because my old LG tv had a button where you can make the volume standard. I sure wished I looked into that before i bought my new tv instead of reviewing the other specs like hdmi inputs.

Sooooo annoying!

Ever notice that some channels are louder (or quieter) than others? I find that CBC is quieter than most other channels. Back in the 1st round when I'd be watching two games at once, it was a pretty glaring difference.

The last time this topic came up I had the same advice that I will give again.

Next time you are buying a TV, look for one with an auto-volume feature. My TV in my bedroom that has that almost never gives me a spike in sound.

A lot of the time you will see two TVs and see they are the same brand, similar features, and maybe one is 10% more than the other. Odds are the one that is slightly more will have (among other features) a volume control option.

I have the auto-volume feature on my TV, but I guess that's for the built in speakers only. I take the audio out of the back of the TV, into my stereo and I get blasted at full volume everytime Subway tries to sell me their sandwiches.

I like to fall asleep watching my tv but I can't anymore because as soon as one of their crappy Rogers ad's plays it wakes me up. I can't enjoy tv anymore without having the remote always ready to mute during the commercials, it's ridiculous!
There is a Petition online regarding this and i urge you all to sign up asap!
