Shouldn't it be Batman and Robbin'?

Any bat I've ever dealt with didn't want to be hanging 'round humans and would make themselves scarce during the day. Does it just hang out in the daylight for all to see? Sounds like a pretty ######ed bat to me. Maybe he has the rabies?

Some people burn bat guano for heat or use it as a fertilizer or do something useful with it. I may have made that up.

Actually he wants to talk to you about a man who sucks the blood out of people. A loan shark

I'd call the humane society and see what they say.

I'm planning on building a bat house this year; in the hopes of attracting a family of bats. They might be willing to help you trap it and find it a suitable home.

It's there during the day for all to see. Kind of seems weird to me. I tried watering it again but that seemed to hardly faze the little dude. I'm going to get up tonight and see if he's off getting into trouble with the other neighborhood bats. Maybe I can put up something when he's gone that will discourage him from returning.

I tried calling the Bat Hotline [(403) 295-6227] provided by the City but basically it's just a recording referring you to various websites and other resources. You can leave a message but the lady doesn't promise to get back to you for a few days. Guess we'll wait and see.

It will probably move on. It may not have been able to get back to where it lives in time last night.

I'd leave it, but that's just me. My wife would have a fit though.

I'd go out at night when it will surely be gone doing other things and muck with it's nest. Make it unwelcome and it will move along. I find that those citronella candles are some of the most putrid smelling things in the world and i wonder if you lit one of those near it's nest while it was gone if it wouldn't prefer to move elsewhere. I wouldn't do it if it was there though, as smoke can make animals a little testy...

I checked on the little guy at 11:30 pm. Still there. I checked again at 2:30 am. Still there. I checked again at 5:30 am. Still there. In fact, it looked like it hadn't moved at all.

Given the chilly temperatures last night and my fruitless efforts to shoosh it away with the garden hose, I feared it may have froze to death. So of course I went and got a long stick (broom handle, actually) and nudged it. Just as with the hose, it turned its head and gave me a contemptuous look. Not dead.

Most of the stuff I had read (par example: http://www.srd.gov.ab.ca/fishwildlif...ebrownbat.aspx) suggested these things would be out and about at night and just chilled temporarily during the day around your house. Doesn't seem to be the case. I wonder if this little dude is sick or... maybe preggers?

The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (who the Humane Society and the Bat Hotline both refer you to regarding bat problems) suggests hanging ammonia soaked rags as close to the little dude as possible. Just as all Germans love David Hasselhoff, all mammals hate ammonia. Or so I've been told.

I saw something on the news or on discovery or something that there is some bat disease going around where they become lethargic like what you're describing. Might be a health issue for you and your family.
I can't really remember the details as I wasn't entirely paying attention, but there is some kind of concern about bats dying en mass and one of the symptoms is unwillingness to fly away even when 'threatened' because their energy is really low.

Photos here (because the forum software won't resize them and I don't want to bork the width of the page):

First Day

Wide angle

Hanging Out

We don't have ammonia on hand so we weren't able to try that trick out last night. However, while I was mowing the lawn I noticed the little guy got a bit more active and was at least grooming himself. I thought last night may have been the night he takes off and goes about his bat business.

Despite my checking on him every couple hours, he didn't appear to move. Fortunately he's acting a bit more bat-like what with his hanging upside down and stuff.

Funny you should mention that, that is my current project.

Your first 2 links are to the same pic.

The third should be captions - is there a LOLBATS site?
