I wouldn't even bother to dig out the patch. Just rake it, put some seed on, rake the seed in, water like it's a biblical flood until it germinates.

The vinegar works great, although you may need a few applications. Get a spray bottle and spray the leaves of the plant thoroughly. The 5% acid in the vinegar kills the leaves, within a few days, and virtually stops the growth of the dandelion. After the leaves are burned off, go and try to remove as much of the root as possible.

I have made one application to my back yard, and 75% of the dandelions are gone. Weekly or monthly maintenance is all that I need to do now.

One more thing....never let any existing flowers go to bloom (fluffy white) or your problem will only get worse.
