It's ridiculousity at it's finest. I'm still entertained though.
Haha I tried to get my gf to watch it for the first time about a couple weeks back, she must've rolled her eyes 100 times throughout. I'll admit it did seem way cheesier than I remember it being back in the day. But really, what 80's(and for that matter, 90's) action movies aren't really cheesy when re-watched now? Indiana Jones is a classic, the theme was even my ringtone last year for awhile.

That said, I'm going into this movie with low expectations. I've got a serious problem with Shia LeBouf, the guy just rubs me the wrong way for whatever reason. I hated him in Transformers. If this movie is some sort of passing of the torch to Shia for future Indy's, then I will have watched my last Indy movie this weekend.

they reported this on Attack of the Show on G4techTV as well... but when they actually had a reporter ask Lucas in person, he shot everything down and said no such discussion has ever taken place.

ok....just got back from the midnight showing.

Summary:

More last Crusade than Raiders
Script a step behind Temple of Doom.

It was fun though.

Won't ruin the plot or post a spoiler.

Great to see Harrison Ford and Karen Allen together again.

****** Editorial Comment - if you are a fan, don't read until after seeing it - *******

A little disappointed in that it won't be a best picture nominee - which for the younger folk was exactly the case when Raiders of the Lost Ark was released. If this is your only exposure to the franchise, then it won't get the credit that it deserves. Raiders of the Lost Ark is to action/adventure what Star Wars is to Sci Fi. Crystal Skull is similar to Phantom Menace in the analogy though.

I loved these movies as a kid..and then I rewatched them when they came out on DVD a few years back, expecting at least a similar level of enjoyment...man was I wrong..they were just plain bad. Cheese on another level. I will probably watch the new one at some point, but not really that excited about it to be honest.

Its funny, I can go back and watch the original Star Wars triology and still enjoy them, but Indie is another story..I have next to no interest in watching any of them again...maybe i'm still pissed at Lucas for Star Wars 1, 2 and 3?

I saw it last night, went to a premiere. It was a lot of fun, but I thought, even for an Indiana Jones movie, it was a bit much. I can suspend belief in movies like this, I got no problem doing that, but this one, especially the last 15 minutes was a bit much. But all in all, it was still a fun show and had some really cool effects, I just felt the effects took too much away from the movie at times.

Cate Blanchett....I don't know what it is about this chick, I think she is smoking hot. She isn't hot in the conventional way, but good god, I love that chick and love how she's in a movie every 6 months.

Shia LaBeouf.....I like the guy, liked him in Transformers, liked him in this, even if he did have a really annoying pube stache going on for the whole thing.

Harrison Ford.....he's still got the Indy swagger. He was great.

SPOILER WARNING REGARDING SHIA AND SPINOFF MOVIE

At the very end of the movie, Shia's character is standing and the wind blows Indy's hat to his feet. Shia picks up the hat, the Indy music kicks in, so you're thinking, alright, spinoff movie for sure. At the last second, Indy picks up the hat and walks off. Pretty cool moment. But yeah, they could easily do a spinoff with Shia in the future and if this thing makes money and Shia gets good reviews, I'm sure they will.

I will be seeing it Saturday night.

This is what Ebert had to say (a rare review written by Ebert right now given his health problems).

Quote:
The Indiana Jones movies were directed by Steven Spielberg and written
by George Lucas and a small army of screenwriters, but they exist in a
universe of their own. Hell, they created it. All you can do is compare one to the other three. And even then, what will it get you? If you eat four pounds of sausage, how do you choose which pound tasted the best? Well, the first one, of course, and then there's a steady drop-off of interest. That's why no Indy adventure can match "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981). But if "Crystal Skull" (or "Temple of Doom" from 1984 or "Last Crusade" from, 1989) had come first in the series, who knows how much fresher it might have seemed? True, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" stands alone as an action masterpiece, but after that the series is compelled to be, in the words of Indiana himself, "same old same old." Yes, but that's what I want it to be.
He gives it 3.5 stars out of 4.

Not bad. Just saw the movie and thought it was pretty entertaining. Though I'll say, I was a little sad seeing how old and tired everyone looked. I mean, it was kinda cool in a way that showed how worn out Indy was with all his adventures throughout the years.

Though the movie had some far fetched moments. I was completely ok with it. I've always equate Indiana Jones with far fetched.

Favorite moment was the action sequence. Classic Indy movie, filled with crazy stunts and jaw dropping mayhem. Though I wish Indy was more involved in the action sequence.

Overall, I'd say not bad. To be honest, I was hoping for more, but after waiting for more than a decade, I'm just happy Indy is back.

It was okay. The nostalgia and 50s stuff was fun, but after that wore off the story ran out of steam.

The old school Arnold action flicks (Commando, Predator) were fricking awesome then, they're fricking aswesome now.

Oh, and Underseige was just as good as I remembered it. Nothing cheesy about putting some guy through a bandsaw.

That because the mummy kind of ripped off indiana jones to a degree. Not the other way around.

strangely enough I liked the Mummy franchise, but have been pretty indifferent to the Indiana Jones series. I suppose I liked the Mummy because it was camp and obviously had a B-movie aesthetic to it, which I tend to like.

I probably won't bother to watch the new Indy 'til it comes out on DVD, but I'm glad they resuscitated it. So many fans waiting for this installment... kind of cool!

Yeah, It was a good movie, but god I hated that damn Crystal Skull story line. They should have just told Lucas to come up with a different story line especially after he proved how he could butcher a series with Star Wars.

some of the reviews that the official reviewers write make me wonder how they have a job. for example. Jeanne Aufmuth of the Palo Alto Weekly writes.

Quote:
The relentless stream of exaggerated action is as taxing as the punchline-laden script.
No **** sherlock, tons of borderline absurd action with some bad punchlines?? Have you seen a Indy film in your life? This is the kind of moron that approaches every movie like it was intended to be a oscar winner that fell short. Earth to Jeanne, some movies are only supposed to be fun. I guess some people are just incapable of seeing a movie for what it was intended to be.

in the last few years, Lucas has pretty much proven that he can destroy any franchise.

I saw it last night. Thought it was pretty good, corny in some parts but overall was entertaining. I didnt mind the storyline too much, imo it could have been much worse.

Saw it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

While the last 15 minutes were unfolding I was thinking to myself that it was a little over the top in terms of story. But while watching the credits I sort of thought "well was Raiders and The Last Crusade anymore believable? Any less far fetched?" Well not really...it's just that those story lines had the beginnings from Christianity and I think we are more accepting of those stories because of our exposure to those stories.
