One thing I forgot to mention, my nutritionist and I stumbled on this completely by accident. What I refer to as the "migraine funk" is the feeling after the major pain is gone, there's that slight hint that my head and eyes are still not right and I have some residual queasiness, and it can last for the rest of the day. Mashed potatoes gets rid of it. As soon as I can tolerate light again, I will eat mashed potatoes and it really helps. I'm sure it has something to do with how potatoes affect insulin levels, but even people I know who's migraines are not blood sugar related find relief from mashed potatoes. It doesn't matter if they're real or instant. I've gotten relief from both.
Only mashed? Not like baked or boiled? Just MAshed? lol

I might try that! I hate that feeling in my eye sockets after a migraine...

Its nice there are so many other guys who have real migraines! Helps put perspective on my own.

Amege is my drug of choice. And soaking your feet in warm/hot water helps too. This sounds weird, but getting my toes massaged, just the first 2 from the big toe, really helps, and my husband got me some peppermint oil from an aromatherapy place and he would rub it on my head during a full blown migraine. I had migraines for 20 years before the miracle of Imitrex came along. Back then the only cure was Demerol and Gravol. After sitting in emergency for 5 or 6 hours they'd treat you after deciding you weren't a junkie just needing a fix. This happened to me at 7 months pregnant once. After 6 hours of throwing up in a room they decided I wasn't a pregnant junkie! Now I get a prescription every 6 months and take it as needed.

To be honest, I've never tried another form because mashed worked so well. Unless you count a desperation move on the road where I tried using french fries to accomplish relief, it didn't work.

This time of year really sucks for me because of the constant weather change. Some other things that sometimes works for me is a Timmy's coffee and a very hot shower.
I don't like the feeling Imitrex gives me and Demerol makes me violently ill and does nothing for my pain really. You would think with all the technology out there they would be able to end these things.

Caffeine and heat? Oh wow, those are two of my triggers, not relief.

I've gotten migraines since I was young. I used to get them a lot, for a while it seemed I'd have a headache more days than I didn't. Sometimes really bad where I'd vomit and couldn't stand light or sound.

Nothing seemed to help. Then I found this book called, "Heal Your Headache 1-2-3" (http://www.amazon.ca/Heal-Your-Heada...1437381&sr=8-2). Best $20 investment I ever made. It talks about how all headaches (stress, tension, etc) are all related and are differing degrees of a migraine. It teaches you how to identify your triggers and to control the ones you can. You can't control the weather and you can't really control your hormones or stress levels, but you can control what you eat. Turns out aspartame and caffeine are really bad for me. Also nitrates that are in processed meat like bacon, salami, etc are headache triggers for me. Since, I have cut out those things, my life has gotten a whole lot better.

I probably get one migraine a month now and when I do I take an Amerge (prescription) which gets rid of it within the hour.

Wow for me, getting an ice pack on my neck and/or putting my feet in a bucket of cold water helps it go away! I was waiting in a hospital for a friend once and had a migraine, so I thought I'd go to the pharmacy to see if I could get some OTC migraine meds. THey gave me some Advil migraine and told me to do the cold thing and it worked!

I havent seen Gravol in US pharmacies as an OTC med the way it is in Canada. It does help with the nausea during a migraine...

My brothers wife gets horrible migranes from time to time - often to a point where she is sometimes bed ridden for days.

Not sure if she has tried that med but will pass the info on to her.
