4 pots did the trick for me.

Speaking of PETA, I wonder if the boiling water trick will keep the neighbours cats out of my garden? Time will tell I guess...

You've clearly never met 4x4. As I understand he has a standing death threat with PETA. First one to cross the battle lines gets to meet his junkyard Rottie Moxie.
Either that or the standing threat is just with me. I cant be certain.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
No, I don't keep sugar in my bedroom. Going to pass on the lemon juice treatment. I think the ants are living in the wall, as opposed to outside, so I'm not sure if boiling water will work. But I'll go snoop around outside at the base of the wall to see. Hopefully my downstairs neighbours don't shoot me for lurking around their patio.
Diatomaceous earth is interesting...
Fortunately I found this, and have decided it is the way to go.

The locals kept 2 of those as pets in Guyana. They were bizzarly friendly for a giant animal with huge claws. Well as long as you didn't get in between the male and its mate.

I have an ant problem as well and spreading baby powder over where they are coming in. Apparently it sticks to them and cuts them up before they can leave it. It is the same basic premise as the 'natural and pet safe' stuff they sell at Rona, Home Depot etc.

I'm just picturing 4X4 running back and forth from his kitchen to his backyard with pots of boiling water and dumping them.
Hilarious! Bet the neighbours were wondering what the hell you were doing..

Simple solution. Cut holes in your walls and pour boiling water into your walls. Repeat as necessary.
Ugh, I can't imagine waking up to ants crawling over my body.

I've used diatomaceous earth before for ants (also very good against slugs), and it works marvelously ... until it rains. Then it all just washes away and you have to re-apply. You also have to know where they're coming in, not always easy. Ant traps work OK, if it's just a few. But when you've got the interest of the whole colony nothing will stop them.
If you're feeling uncomfortable about embracing our formic overlords, I recommend watching Phase IV.

This worked for my neighbors. The ants in her house were so bad they got everywhere and into everything. They even got inside her freezer and would freeze to death. The bottom of the freezer had a pile of ants that we initially thought was coffee grounds. It was gross. She tried everything suggested here (except the boiling water) and nothing worked.
When she picked up one of these electronic things we figured it was a joke. But she plugged it in her kitchen and hasn't had ants since. The only drawback of it, is about every 30 seconds or so, it makes a very faint clicking sound, almost like the tick of a clock. We got used to it pretty quickly, but if you're a light sleeper it might bother you. Of course, not as much as ants crawling on you. I think its worth a try. I think you're probably right and they're living in your walls. If you don't want to go with this, you could take a weekend and really poison the suckers. You'll have to spray along all windows and baseboards, remove electrical outlets and light switches, vents, grates, etc. and spray into the walls. It would probably help for a little while.

Outside, boiling water works, inside, lemon juice and some kind of spice, cinnamon, chili powder, even black pepper.
