EDIT I park outside all the time and have never had a problem. HAd a very nice car too. Where do you park?

That’s actualy the exact opposite of why they make them like that. The idea is they are hard to replace with lots security hoops and cost hurdles in the way. You are supposed to take your face plate with you when you go into the mall or into your house, making the stereo worthless if its not there - hopefully deterring the thief from bothering with your car/stereo and moving on to the next guy... the one who didn't remove his faceplate... ummm, like say the Captain...

I read this thread this morning and thought, man I live in Willow Park, that's weird, well I'm glad it wasn't me.
That was before I got to my car.
Well sure enough I got into mine, and my satellite radio was gone. !@#*!!
No damage though, they picked my lock. I'm just glad that somehow my clubs that are worth about 3k and right behind my front seat were still there.
Sorry to hear about your window though CC. Unfortunately it's usually the exact same price to get a new deck as it is to replace a faceplate.

Ahhh yep, your right, but I guess I didn't explain myself fully. I knew you were supposed to take it with you. But I also thought you could replace it if you needed to. For instance I knew a guy who took it with him, but it fell out of his pocket during his travels. I'm pretty sure he was able to order a new one. I don't know what brand this was though.

I think they tried to pick the lock first, and then got frustrated and banged out the window.
I'm going to go and pick up a new stereo this weekend, trying to find a face plate is probably not worth the aggravation.
And yes I do feel dumb for not taking it in with me, I usually do, but I had a bunch of stuff that I had to take into the house and forgot.

Idiots. If you have a Sirius, you can't hook it up because it has a serial number on it that has to be called in before you can use it.
You should call sirius and ask them if they can track its location if it's on.

While I don't have a faceplate deck anymore, I used to put it in the glovebox every time I'd leave my truck. I don't know if anyone ever cased my truck, so I can't say it worked for sure but, that seemed to work for me. Oh, and don't they have the red beeping alarm-like light in 'em now? If I were a prowler, I'd avoid alarm-equipped vehicles.

It's xm, but yes it's the same way. I called and they locked the radio ID, so if they try to hook it up again nothing will work.
Unfortunately neither sirius nor xm have the ability to individually track units so no luck there.
Oh well, new ones for existing subscribers are < 50 bucks.

You know what really sucks about these break ins, is that it's usually one person or group of people that continually prowl the same area. I know the guy who does it in Canyon Meadows, and it really sucks that it's just one guy who makes a whole community live in fear of their car getting broken into every night.

Like you know him personally? Because it may be a good idea to let the cops know.

I'm sure the police know as well. Back in the day, I knew of the guys who did break ins in my old neighbourhood. The police knew who they were too, but unless they caught them in the act, or had cause to search them, there was little they could do.

Ouch luckily I live in the up scale neighborhood of Deer Ridge so I won’t have to worry about thieves
And CC you should talk to the poster jroc, he works in car audio at the dreaded Future Shop but he can hook you up with a good deal

I found this out a few months ago when somebody unsuccessfully tried to hot wire my F-350. Couldn't get the truck started so they took my Sirius receiver (which was a hell of a lot better than the whole truck and its contents). I reported it stolen to Sirius immediately since I didn't want some scum bag listening to Sirius on my dime. Sirius told me that they couldn't mark the receiver as stolen. But I could call back later on to see if somebody had activated that ID number and then call the police. I was a little surprised by this. Obviously I don't have a clue how their system works. But it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to tag an ID number for a receiver that has been reported as stolen.

Weird, well for me xm immediately tagged it as stolen and disabled the unit. It won't ever work for this theif, so I'm satisfied.

I know who he is, and where he lives, but I'm definitly not friends with him. I found out through someone else that it was him, and then one night I saw him walking away from my car at 2am, back to his jeep. I would have confronted him but i was naked and just up to take a piss. But like another poster said, cops are basically powerless unless they catch him in the act.

But if the cops were not so lazy they could easily gather some evidence. If they know who the person is for sure one would think that it would be easy to catch him in the act or gain some sort of evidence.

The police are so incredibly short staffed that when it comes to crimes involving property that has insurance; they have bigger fish to fry.
Classic example, last year my car was stolen. When I went down to the impound yard there was no indication that the police did anything other than tow the car back to their custody; when I would have thought they would have at least checked for finger prints. If they had got some and they were in the system; it would be a pretty easy case- Exhibit A: Fringerprints. Exhibit B: testimony from me (the owner) that Billy Joe Jim Bob did not have permission to ever use my car.

But then Billy Joe Jim Bob could just say he saw it abandoned and was looking for the owners information to report it or something. I'm sure the cops have heard them all.
