this is why I'd never leave any of mine locked outside. Bike thieves suck. Some other websites to check are kijiji, craigslist, bow cycle, MTBR and Ebay. Let shops like Bow and the Bike Shop know as well.

Back in 1980, I had my bike stolen out of my garage. Bike theft is nothing new.

That's a real bummer, I feel for your girlfriend. I just bought myself a new cruiser, and I'm terrified everytime I lock it up somewhere outside. Even though its extremely girly, its worth a lot, so I'm kinda nervous leaving it around.

Anyways, I browse lots of sites that usually have ads for used bikes, so if I see any ads matching your description of the bike I'll let you know!

Yeah there really isn't much that you can do in this situation (sorry), there is a good chance that your bike right now is in the back of a truck on it's way to Vancouver or somewhere in the States never to be seen or heard from again. It sucks an insane amount, but if you have homeowners insurance there are plans that do cover bike theft, especially if it took place at your residence and if there is as much damage as it sounds like there really shouldn't be any doubt that your bike was stolen.

Not covered. I suggested it to her when she bought it, but her beliefs include not insuring basically anything because its asking for bad karma. Its one of those things about her that drive me crazy, but I can deal with that.

Unfortunately, it doesn't change the fact that she loaned it to me and it was stolen under my use, so I'm on the hook for a new one. I'll be hitting up all the usual websites today if it means saving six or seven hundred.

Thanks for all the replies.

I used to work at a bike store and if you have any pictures I can send them about, but as much as I hate to say it, you are in all likelihood out of luck.

if you have homeowners insurance there are plans that do cover bike theft,

Most home insurance policies cover bikes but have a $1,000 limit. In this case the value of the bike would be under the deductible or close to it depending if there is a $500 or $1,000 deductible so it is not going to be covered by most home insurance policies. A lot of people schedule their bikes to their home insurance policies meaning that they insure them seperately. It costs more but it covers all situations and comes with a $50 deductible in most cases. Also most bike shops have contact info for insurance companies that specialize in bike insurance so you can insure your bike and not have it effect your home insurance.
