I also keep my grass long (second highest setting on my lawnmower), keeps the roots from drying out.
For killing weeds, I used to spot spray but it was time consuming and never ending (I like my lawn to be 100% weed free which is almost impossible). I started to use the Killex bottle that comes with the garden hose attachment. You can spray your whole lawn in minutes and it will smoke most broad leaf weeds.

Now here is something I think buckwheat and I can agree on. The best time that your irrigation should run is just finishing up before the sun comes up. Allowing water to sit on the grass during the night can promote growths of differing disease, if you finish up your watering just as dawn approaches the sun burns off any water sitting there. Sometime it's just not possible to to finish watering before that so you may have to go longer or start earlier but whatever the case watering during the heat of the day isn't the best as the efficiency goes down and Buckwheat can correct me if I'm wrong but many plants "shut down" during the heat of the day to conserve energy.
