Maybe she's like Dido in the Eminem video and she was never allowed to go into the basement and see what kind of crap he was uup to?
24 years without going downstairs in your own house doesnt seem too realistic though. Especially when looking for your missing daughter...I think the first thing I would do is check around the house...like every damn corner and behind every door (even the new non-suspicious soundproof keyless entry one).
From the sounds of it this man was pretty sadistic and controlling. I personally find it hard to believe that the woman was oblivious to this, but it is possible that the husband simply terrified her into not going anywhere near the basement. Maybe he gave food/got rid of garbage while she was out for the day.

Still the whole thing is extremely bizzare.

edit: the above poster answered it.

also pictures of the rooms where they were kept:

Depends on what the basement is like in that country. I remember my grandparents' house that was built in the 40's, the basement was pretty much a dirt floor. The part that was right at the bottom of the stairs my grandma would go to, but she would never go into the further back part- that was my grandfather's workshop and place he would start his plants in the winter.

Perhaps in this case the father came up with the idea because there was a part of the basement that he knew his wife had never gone into in 20 years.

What is with Austrians and locking people in basements and cellars? I believe this is the third such case in recent years. ..

Three of the children were raised upstairs in the family house by Elisabeth's father and his wife. They went to school and lived relatively normal lives, according to police.

I'm pretty sure the wife knew and either condoned it or was powerless to do anything about it. She raised 3 of the kids herself so she must have known!

1) The guy looks like a real weirdo

2) I think the wife should be investigated as well.

3) These poor, poor kids. I can't imagine some sicko doing this in the first place, let alone his own kid.

4) Imagine if this sick had been hit by a bus or died in his sleep. The rest of his family would have starved to death in their dungeon.

5) Punishment: Life in prison where he will be kept in a small cell and have no access to outside. He will also be repeatedly raped. He will scream but no one will care.

It's awful because his sentence in jail will be so much better than the conditions they were put in.

Really I think the only fair punishment is to put him in his cellar for the rest of his life.

Wow. This is perhaps the most disturbing thing I have ever heard about.

How the hell does someone maintain such a blatant facade for over 20 years?

I can't imagine what life will be like for the prisoner and her children... how do you rehabilitate people that have had suffering to this extent? For that long?!

I don't think there is any suitable punishment for this asshat. Actually, I say let his destroyed family decide his fate.

Yeah, not doubt.

I think these kids are going to be screwed up for life - and probably have severe effects on many of those around them due to their required needs - physical and especially mental.

Yeah, imagine going through life knowing that... um... your grandpa is your dad?

The whole thing just reeks of evil and these kids are going to have to try and lead normal lives. I don't see how they can...

Sick sick sick!!!

Pure evil is what i'd call that guy. I'm sure some shrink will try to figure out what was going through his mind.

Sad part is the kids will scarred emotionaly for life.

Put this guy in general population and let the inmates take care of this peice of garbage.

Disclaimer Alert: I've never been in this situation... obviously not many people have. I risk being insensitive... but after a whole thread, nobody has asked this yet;

Why didn't she attempt to escape?

Now obviously 24 years is a long time... seriously like 1/2 a lifetime in a confined space? There's no way you wouldn't have psych issues (in my opinion). But wouldn't ANY kind of escape or attempt happen? What if he NEVER let you go? What if you died down there? Wouldn't you do absolutely anything to get out?

What could or would you do in this situation? I've been thinking about this... I'd be willing to go to some pretty drastic measures. I guess I don't understand all the circumstances, so I definitely cannot and would never judge. But I just got to thinking... what would I do if that was me?

That is terrible either way. Very very sad. It's one of those things where no punishment is good enough... and the best solution is that it never happened at all.

Stories like this are why I now try to avoid the news. It almost makes it hard to enjoy life knowing things like this occur.
