I have huge-ass headphones at my desk and listen to rock / metal REALLY LOUD. As long as I get my work done, it's not a problem. In fact, music is conducive to a positive and balanced team atmosphere - in today's working world with a limited supply of talent, management has to make concessions.
Like someone mentioned, I would considering quitting if my music was taken away.
It is my opinion that, the educated Gen Y'ers will not stand for such workplace restrictions. They'll simply snub their nose at the rulemakers and go somewhere else...
...I love being part of this group.

They did not give ANY reasons for the change?
Are you able to find out the reason(s)?

You don't work at Symcor do you? Only a company such as Symcor would pull bull moves like that.
What is puzzling is the company pulls this out after a good quarter. Makes no sense, and frankly, smells of horrible management. From my experience, you only take things away because the priviledge is being abused.

I don't work in an office, but a booth where I cut trees to length at a mill. I have my ipod boombox and I just bought a satellite radio home kit for my booth. Our bosses have no problem letting people listen to music, its actually encouraged. What a suit dummy.

Nothing other than there have been complaints and it's not professional.
Everyone's got their music on again for lunch hehehe. I've managed to calm everyone down and told them to give it a week or so...not sure what will happen.
And no it's not Symcor although I have heard bad things about them so your statement is not surprising.

Personally I find music distracting while I work, but if people had it on their headphones I'd have no problem with it at all. Seems pretty dumb to ban it totally.

I listen to the fan at my desk on a little clock radio, no one seems to mind
I make sure to ask everyone first... I thought it wouldn’t be allowed, I work at a very conservative company

Well if even one person had a stereo going (no headphones) or their headphones too loud (so that others heard the twittering(?)) i can totally see it being banned.
And if people were missing calls to their desks that is another valid reason - even one missed call or people needing an extra ring would add up in managements eyes. The employee sees it as a small individual lapse but the company has to add up the sum of those lapses.
In my office experience people tend to take a good thing and push it too far until some keener-person (quietly) complains... and then those same people act all shocked that the privilage was provoked while quietly being very pleased with themselves. There are people like that in every office.
Claeren.

It could be worse. I work beside a guy who only listens to classic rock. I want to kill myself.

I would consider that a valid complaint. I would rather hear complaints from the actual employees sitting there rather than from management sitting on the other side of the building!

My supervisor has no problems with us bringing out the headphones even though the head managers prefer we don't. I work graveyard so the managers don't come in ever during that time, which works for us! I find music actually helps my productivity, it puts me in a good mood. If I had to listen to dead silence or whatever plays on the speakers (company playlist *shudders*) for 9-10 hrs a day I'd quit on the spot.

Yes. Yes it does. It really matters if people want to listen to Wham! I would never employ anyone that wanted to listen to Wham!
As for music, I dont see the problem. I live off my iPod, I bring it to school and do homework to it, I have it plugged into my office computer right now to listen to music. Of course I keep the volume down in order to be respectful to our bookkeeper, because she is a nice lady.
But if she did complain, she would jabber at me in Ukrainian or Polish or whatever language it is that she speaks and her husband, whom I am convinced is involved in the Red Mafia would kill me.

If it's a radio station, overpower it with an FM transmitter on something like a satellite radio. He goes for classic rock and ends up getting the XM Hardcore Rap station.

Is this petty muscle-flexing or good old-fashioned stupidity?
I haven't taken many management courses but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you don't reward good work by taking away things the employees enjoy.

I am curious about one thing. How did all this music listening start? I went to University in the late 90s and harely anyone listened to music (Other than those guys who had those ugly yellow SPORT walkmans).
Nowadays it seems everyone listens to music at school, at work and going to and from school/work.
