Call me crazy, but I could swear that I heard a while ago that the Apple Store in Calgary is going to be put in Market Mall.

I went to the Apple Store in Manhattan last fall. Guess what folks? It's a store. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Damn, that's pretty funny. This is why so many people love Mac -- it's the unpretentious, whimsical touches like "Genius Bar" and "Smugness Corner".
Laugh all you want...the training to work at one far, far, exceeds anything the poor kids at Futureshop or Best Buy, or any other electronics place receive. They are quite literally the face of the organization, Apple doesn't take hiring them lightly.

It's a wonder Apple even bothers with an advertising budget considering all breathless free hype they get from their current customers.

It's not breathless hype, there are some good blogs around by ex-Apple employees, maybe do some research instead of jumping to conclusions

I wouldn't call it "jumping" to a conclusion, when examples of it are all around us on a daily basis for the past several years.

I am actually afraid to purchase a Mac; for fear that I will turn into one of these fanboys I have to deal with in the office. The type where anytime anything goes wrong on a PC, you hear about how Mac is better. But then when I tell them about an issue with Apple software, they say how it works opposite to how any other computer I have used in the last 25 years is somehow "better."

"It's a good thing that iTunes deleted all your MP3s."

Because ex-employees usually give positive reviews of the company they got fired from...

I'm afraid blogs by ex-Apple employees don't really tickle my fancy.

And I'm jumping to a conclusion because it's an easy conclusion to jump to... calling it the "Genius Bar" is downright goofy. Hyping the name-tag set at the Apple Store as a bunch of highly-trained wizards leads me to the conclusion that the advertising works on some people.

"To get your foot in the door you have to pass a test on diagnosing Mac problems, then if selected you're sent to Cupertino for two weeks of training en route to gaining three Apple certifications. Then comes some "real-world" training at Apple Retail headquarters, before finally ending with some on-the-job training at an actual retail Store locations."

They are better trained than most retail staff....which was my original point.

But it's a glass cube! Thus, a tourist destination.

Sydney doesn't have an Apple store although one is being built as we speak/read other peoples' posts.

There are currently job postings on the Apple website for Apple Store employees at both West Edmonton Mall and Market Mall. No official mention of when these jobs would start...

Guess I'm just not integrating properly into Calgary society, because somehow I still don't "get" how an Apple store, an expansion at Chinook Centre*, a giant new hirise downtown, or a mega mall in Balzac is going to make Calgary a more interesting or livable city. In fact, I think the city'd be better off will all of the above mentioned things. Call me crazy, but I'd still rather have more parks, a more livable approach to development (including more walkable neighbourhoods) and better public facilities.

Not sure why it really matters, been to many Apple Stores in the States, and there's nothing special about them. At all. All the products you can find at any number of places here already, and the places here have demos that you can play around with...and thats the non-Apple stores. Plus, all at the same prices you already pay.

One wonders how returns the WEM outlet will have with teeth marks in the various products.
Not sure about that. Maybe because i live in silicon valley the store in my area is different. But i think there is something a little bit special....albeit not my cup of tea....when a computer store is routinely overflowing with people on a friday night. Everyone is laughing, talking outside with coffees, kids, chatting, etc. Lots of buzz. You seriously would think it was a pub if it wasn't an apple store.

Uhh.... its just a computer store. And does it make Calgary LESS interesting? No. No it will not.

Well, for starters, when you walk in the door and you're the only other customer in the store, it would be nice if one of the four employees would even look up from their computer and say hi.

My Mac Dealer is in for a rude awakening when the Apple Store hits town. They may actually have to learn the meaning of customer service. It is pretty bad down there.

Always check this guide before buying any Apple product:
http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

You don't want to buy something that is about to get updated. New versions of Apple products are usually significantly improved, but for the same price. It is often worth waiting a month if you know that a newer version is coming.
