Pittsburgh trades RP Arthur Rhodes to Cleveland for OF Matt Lawton. This is not comfirmed just being reported. This would be the 2nd time in 2 weeks that Rhodes would be traded. Not a major deal but saves the Pirates some cash. More was expected from Lawton in Cleveland, the Tribe gave up Robbie Alomar to get him.
|
Sure more was expected from Lawton, but to trade him for Arthur Rhodes? Not to say that Rhodes is horrible, but isn't Lawton worth more than that, or...?

A couple more interesting transactions:
A report from TSN is saying the BoSox are close to signing Edgar Renteria, and that the Sox have signed LHP John Halama to a deal. Halama isn't great but is a nice addition because he can be a starter or a bullpen guy.
The Angels signed veteran P-Paul Byrd and then traded P Russ Ortiz to the Reds for minor league pitcher.
|
http://tsn.ca/mlb/news_story.asp?id=108168
Yup, looking like Renteria is likely going to sox, although not a done deal yet?
Poor Cabrera, though....poor guy took a bit to get going when he first got to the sox...but after that...I thought he did not too bad. Oh well...maybe the Cards will pick him up, so effectively you have a Renteria-Cabrera swap?
Cheers. [/b][/quote]
I won't give up on the fact that Renteria is not going to comeback but it looks that way.
I think the Cards will sign Cabrera if Renteria goes and that is okay in my books. Renteria was awesome for us and one of my favorite players but this team is all about getting guys to fit into the clubhouse and Cabrera seems like he should be alright.
Hopefully this means we will get a top pitcher which is where we need the most help.

Report: Beltre to join Mariners
http://tsn.ca/mlb/news_story.asp?id=108281
According to a report on ESPN, the Mariners have agreed to terms with third baseman Adrian Beltre on a five-year contract worth $65 million.
The reported agreement comes one day after the club signed first baseman Richie Sexson to a four-year contract worth $50 million.

well nintendo is spending all their money on 2 big bats...I have heard that the M's are also interested in Delgado. If they do that watch for sexson to move to LF. But they still need some pitching help.

Well its official...the A's have traded Tim Hudson to the Braves. However, the A's did not get Marcus Giles in return. Instead the A's get pitchers Dan Meyer, and Juan Cruz as well as young OFer Charles Thomas.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1947892
As an Oakland fan this hurts, clearly a salary dump...if Giles would have been included it would have been alot better. It could be along year in Oakland with the M's loading up and the Halos remaining very good.

Not really a salary dump, so much as trading away 1 years rights for something in return.

Hmm...a bit of a surprise on this one. Not so much the actual trading of one of the "Big 3", but what they got in return. Although I really like Cruz.
Also thought that maybe Zito might have been the one to get the boot, but maybe not...?
This also must mean that Harden is to play a much bigger role now. And does Blanton, assumingly, come up and join the rotation for next year?
Interesting stuff in Oakland - as usual, though.
Cheers.

The score is reporting a blockbuster deal:
To Yankees: Randy Johnson
To D'backs: Shawn Green, Brad Penny
To LA: Javier Vazquez
And I also read that the Mets have offered Delgado a 3 year, 30 million dollar contract.
Anyone want to guess where Beltran is going to end up? I still think he will be a Yankee before spring training.

With trading Jason Kendall to the A's, today the Pirates acquired veteran catcher Benny Santiago and cash from the Royals for a minor league pitcher.
Nothing significant here but Pittsburgh needed a catcher.

I wonder how much the Yankees are going to pay Johnson?

I really think the Yankees are making a horrible move in that Johnson trade. Offering a good young pitcher who had a bad half season for a pitcher (yes a great pitcher) who only has maybe 2 years left. I'd be unhappy if I was a Yankee fan.
And I think Beltran is going to end up staying in Houston.

Age is not an issue for the Yankees. When they can buy any player that they want. Vazquez was terrible last year and might be better back in the national league...I don't like the deal from a LA perspective, they lost Beltre to Seattle, and now they trade Green, they also lost Steve Finley to the halos. Where is the offense coming from?

The Yankees have finally signed FA pitcher Carl Pavano to a 4 year 40 million dollar contract, with an option for a 5th year according to ESPN. The Yankee spending begins.

Red Sox signed Matt Clement, which is good news, because now the Jays won't get him. they were willing to overpay dearly to have him, but in the end he chose Boston. Now the Jays will focus on a less marquee starter, and 1 of Moises Alou or Erubiel Durazo.

So you are figuring that the Jays will only lose 85 games this year compared to 94 last season?! Face it Jays suck!

Yea well since they play in the toughest division in baseball its hard not to suck...if they played in the weak AL Central or the Pathetic AL west then they could sneak into the playoffs every year or so. But since they don't i know that since they can't outspent NY or Bos that they won't make the playoffs but i still cheer for them...becoming an A's fan is an easy way to sneak off and cheer for an equaly crappier team but one that because of division's usualy has a chance...though with how the Angels have been spending might not anymore.
Therefore Jays do suck...but less then the A's

I dunno if you saw Alou's numbers last year or not, but he had a great season, one of his best if not THE best. He is 38, and I would much rather sign a guy like Durazo. But Alou seems to be showing no signs of slowing down.

Alou may be having a decent season on the O side but i've never been sold on his defence and as he's gotten older i think it's gotten a lot worse. Offense would help the Jays but not when they play on turf and you can't field well
