"The '57 has a V-neck though right?"
Yes but even what fender say is a soft V has changed through the years. I know of 1987 models that have a more pronounced V then mine (1994) I think mine are the same as the current models excexpt for the pickups. I've never tried the EJ model but I have read up on it because it does have a candy apple finish. I always assumed they both had the same soft V neck, this is the first I've heard of it being both.
As for the radius (7.25), yes I have heard of more then a few players having a problem with it. There really isn't too many fenders that have the radius because of that. But since I've played it for 14 years I really don't have any problems, for me it's normal and I'm trying to get used to having a 9.5 on the Clapton.
I have also heard things about the finish on the neck of the EJ, it seems to be a popular topic lately... once again I don't really know if there's a difference between the two models as on paper they look very similar but i haven't heard the complaints (for the 57). Like I said I do think the finish are similar and I've grown to love mine. When I went to buy a second guitar just now I was going to get the same model and colour, thats how much I liked it, but fender no longer makes a fiesta red so I decided to go with Claptons mid boost in his strats for something new

No not at all, Eric Clapton's legendary Blackie was a combination of a few regular production fenders, Jimi use to go into Manny's and pick one right off the shelf. It's not the guitar but how you bond with it

yeah, on paper and the fender specs online make them sound very much the same but I found both a 57 reissue and an EJ in a store and tried both, very different. The 57 has a normal neck, thin clear-coat, fast for playing. I don't know why they went with such a thick coat on the EJ, it covers the frets and there's even some on the nut, you wear it off as you play. It gives the neck a very orange color. But yeah, the 57 did fret out on a few bends for me, I liked the radius for chording. The EJ starts out with a very soft V but by the 5th fret, it starts turning into a C quite quickly. The headstock is also very different with staggered heads so it doesn't need a string tree. Also there's no cover on the back of the body to hide the springs. EJ claims these all affect tone for him or something, but I'm always about stuff always getting caught in the cavity like my clothes
Tell me, does your 57 pickguard (I assume it's single ply) sort of warp/pop up above the bridge? It does on my EJ. I guess that's unavoidable since it's so thin and the wood does change shape with time and humidity. I wish it wouldn't do that.

And also the bloody player.
Last week I saw a guy with a highway-1 strat play all sorts of styles amazingly. Puts my guitar skills to absolute shame, I don't think I could ever come close to that. To be honest, I feel that my guitar is largely wasted ON ME.

Both are 8 screw single ply pickguards. the '57 is tight all the way around, never had a problem with it. The Clapton pulls away right above the neck pickup and under the tone controls.
It's something I'm not too pleased with also but i guess sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don't. I've heard of others changing to a thicker pickguard for this reason
I know Warmoth makes them but I'm not too sure what the thickness is for fenders, but i assume they are (or at least they would tell you the difference)

Hey stang (or anyone else), what do you think the market is like for a slightly used (honestly) Les Paul Studio? I bought it probably 5 years ago now and have played it only a hand full of times. It's been in its case under my bed for about a year and I'm thinking of selling it. I paid just over $2000 for it back then.

Judging by Kijiji edmonton and Calgary area... anywhere from 1000-1500
Depending on color/upgrades, etc.
Why dont you play it?

I only play casually, so I usually just pick up my acoustic, or bass or something less cumbersome. $1500 would be pretty good, I'd sell it for that. Thanks man.

I'm considering buying a guitar to eventually try and learn to play. About how expensive would it be for just a simple starter guitar?

Cheap... I find tons of decent guitars on Kijiji all the time...
What do you want to play Electric or accoustic?

I'd trade it to a mechanic who can replace the heater core in a 1990 735iL BMW.
