To all of those on here claiming that this must have been a suicide attempt, or anything of the sort you all disgust me. The man driving the Semi was a wonderful person who had the unfortunate disease that caused him to go into a state of shock. He had a beautiful fiancee and two loving children. This event is devistating to the family, who desreve more respect than this. This video is horrific and should be taken off. Whoever posted it should be ashamed of them selves.
Who knows if its true or not - but to drive 20km in the wrong direction at high speeds and not hit anything doesn't seem very medically induced to me. (Smoke out the stacks is a great observation as well.)
At least one witness said the driver of the large, long tractor-trailer unit appeared to be purposely trying to hit oncoming traffic. "He was moving the steering wheel. He looked angry, he looked mad, he looked zoned out," said William Acevedo, who had to swerve to avoid being hit.

Uh huh. Like it would be difficult to hit oncoming traffic with a semi.
And at 80 km/h head-on, there's no way you have enough time to look at the guy and notice he was angry. Not only that, but angry AND zoned-out, which is a pretty particular explanation if it makes any sense at all.

Semi truck drivers have to have a physical every year. If he had some sort of medical condition that could possibly cause him to react like this, he shouldn't have been driving semi trucks. Just my opinion.
There obviously was no barrier where he crossed over into oncoming traffic, and no reason why he wouldn't have continued across until he hit the ditch. Not only that, but eventually those very same barriers would have forced the truck slower, or a break in the barrier would have led to him crossing back or crashing. The truck was still outpacing traffic that was doing 80+.
Someone claims to have seen him before he went over and said he definitely looked unconscious. When I heard "diabetic truck driver", I just assumed a guy in his 40's or 50's, apparently he was only 25. Very sad.
It was on Yellowhead between 178th & 184th, that's right by my house, I take that road almost every day. I can't imagine what I wouldve done had I seen that live.
I too take this route every day and while I am extremely thankful that it appears that somehow no one else was hurt, it is a very sad day for the person's family.
i can't imagine how I would react if i saw a semi barrelling down headon on me on the yellowhead.

I used to drive that bit every day too when I worked in Edmonton. Go up 184th street onto the Yellohead to 170th, and than into St.Albert, it was the best way before the Henday was extended and the 156th overpass opened up. Isn't there like a Peterbuilt dealership on the North End of 118th where 178th ends....Crazy stuff.
