From the second list.... 2, 4, 6, 7, 14, 17, 20, 22 and probably would have got 10, 16 as well if I had spent more time looking at them.

Honolulu. I missed this one because I have never been able to shake the idea that it's on the biggest island, which is the furthest SE. Damn.
Toronto. Just too easy...
Never would have guessed Baghdad.
Barcelona...! Damn. Didn't even come to mind.
NAirobi? Who'd have thought...
Missed Venice 
Montevideo? Where the hell is that? (this is getting harder...)

Got Paris, New Orleans, Dubai, Kathmandu, Honolulu, Toronto, Baghdad, Nairobi, Venice, Singapore, San Fran, Beijing, Anchorage.
Ashamed I missed Rome, Vegas, Istanbul but especially Melbourne and Perth. For Zurich I guessed Geneva, I was in the right country at least.

We had questions like this on a remote sensing exam from a course took in university. It's a pretty fun exercise. You learn to pick out different type of land development, city planning, and agriculture. For example, many old cities European are recognizable by their circular cores in the old parts of the city. French cities are recognizable from city development influence by the French signeuriel system of dividing land.... even in big cities, you can often see remnants of it.
