yeah, I got out at the right time.

As for the town theme song, sounds like nothing's changed there. That place was always good for a brawl on the weekend.

As for a serious answer..

Ever been to Edmonton? Because it's pretty much a smaller version without the big mall IMO. It is what it is, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy your time here, have good friends, meet good people etc etc.

The problem with it is when people in your situation come in, and don't treat it as a home, but just a stopping ground.

i lived there from 1988 until 1997 and it wasn't THAT bad..not as bad as you guys are making it sound. However, i guess it's different when you're a kid (i lived there from ages 10 to 19) then when you're an adult because there is lots of things for kids to do but as an adult there isn't anything.

In terms of watching the flames..ask my brother OILFAN 81 as he lived there more recently than I did. He might be able to give you some feedback

I've spent a decent amount of time up there with my current job. It's not so bad. I'm getting a good gig too...25% raise, $35 per day for life expenses, a place to live for free and a car.

So no CPers yet...I just know there seems to be a fair chunk of Oilers fans and Newfies.

I'm there right now. The whole "don't go out after dark" thing is bang on. Someone got shot on the dance floor at Diggers last weekend. The place is an absolute hole, you'll find out for yourself when you get up here.

What a complete load of horse crap.

Don't go to crappy bars. A guy was killed at a bar, don't go to any! What a joke.

It isn't bang on, don't go to bad places. Places that I frequent like Paddy McSwiggins is alot of fun, and guess what, you're allowed to go there after dark.

Living in Edmonton... Fort Mac sounds like a utopia from your description.

Go to the 7-11 in downtown after dark. It's like something out of a movie, there are twelve year old prostitutes who are addicted to crack hanging out there. It's definitely the worst place I've ever lived.

Being a resident who currently owns a house in Fort Mcmurray i can actually give you an honest answer... There are alot of myths about fort mac about all the crime and such. Yes there is crime(also consider it is albertas 3rd largest municipality). If you look for trouble im sure you can find it anywhere. It is what it is. A large boomtown with a relatively new population, much who cant own a house therefore dont care about making it their home.
If you are a hardworker and dont do cocaine you shouldnt have a problem. However it is not a city that you will want to retire in. There are few big box stores as everyone refuses to move their family there, then creating a secondary workforce with wives/teenage kids needing jobs.
You may want to fly as well as there are to many drunk/tired morons who think driving 170kmh in their lifted duramaxes on hwy 63.

Long story short- its what you make of it

There are bars that play whatever games on tv, as for a flames hangout just remember you are in oil country

Wow.. Talk about over exaggerating. I was born in Fort McMurray, moved here in 2001 for school, when I finished I moved back for about a year, and I came back to Calgary this past fall. Sure that 7-11 has some interesting characters, but I can easily walk out my front door here in Calgary and find just as many interesting characters hanging out (I live just off 17th ave and 14th st).

Don't get me wrong, I do not like Fort McMurray, which is why I don't live there. The worst place ever? Jeez, little overboard. I guess if you live in the oilcan motel above diggers, you may not want to go out after dark by yourself, but you can say the same if you lived above the Cecil here in Calgary. From the age of 13 I went out almost every weekend, when I moved back last year I went out almost every weekend, lots of times to the dreaded evil bar, and guess what? I've never even gotten in a fight, don't get me wrong, it can be rough there, but just use common sense and you should be fine. If you live in an area like Thickwood, going out after dark, is not a risk whatsoever.

I do feel safer walking in downtown Calgary at night than in Fort McMurray, but there really is no reason to be walking around downtown Fort McMurray after dark, there is nothing down there.

All in all I agree with Mr.MastadonFarm, it can be a fun place. As much as I don't like it there I had a lot of good times living there, and always have a good time when I go back. There are some good people there, and there are some bad ones, just like anywhere else. For me, I just prefer living in a larger city, there are just fewer I like to do up there like watching live music, and snowboarding.. It might be a little rougher due to some of the workers who are up there, but thats to be expected.

If you have any specific questions it would be good to ask Mr.MastadonFarm, Captain Sensible, or myself, not sure who else has lived up there for a long time, but we all spend the majority of our lives in Fort McMurray. Good luck.

Paddy's is great. We were there after our hig school reunion last fall and had a blast.

Diggers, is Jelly still working the door there? He'd be in his 50's I'd guess by now.
