But you do bring up a good point. I'd sure be choked if I dropped my ebook and lost a bunch of books I paid for. I wonder how licensing would work for these books. If they're only good on one device, how do you upload your stuff to a new device in the event you damage, destroy or upgrade your hardware?

I would imagine you would be able to replace them seeing as you purchased them. IF the company you bought them from wouldn't ante up they are readily available for free on the internet.

This has been discussed on TWIT, and if you destroy your kindle, as soon as you get a new one your books will redownload.
However, I believe the books you purchase on it, are not transferrable to otehr devices. Not 100% sure of that but I believe I have heard thats the case.

They transfer automatically to your iPhone if you use the Kindle iPhone app. Other non Amazon sanctioned devices, yeah I doubt it.

I get motion sick when I read while in a car or on a train. Considering my usage of a kindle would be primarily to pass time while travelling somewhere the kindle is kind of a no go for me. Anybody that I've heard if that has had one has loved it though.
For me my big addiction lately has been audio books on my iphone. I can have a book last me weeks and the train rides fly by.

Geez, I thought the first one was priced a little high. Don't get me wrong ... it's awesome and all, but $500 American is quite the price.

Can someone answer a pretty simple question for me: Do these work in Canada? Someone told me that there were issues with these....I really want one, but only if its actually worth having up here.

The wireless purchase and download of books from Amazon will not work in Canada.

Anyone wants to start guessing when it'll show up in Canada?

^^Don't bother waiting to see if Amazon finally ships the Kindle to Canada. This is going to sound like an advert but I absolutely love my Sony Reader PRS-700 which is available here. It's a fantastic machine. The kindle is not an option for Canadians plus it fking ugly!
I'm an avid reader so the Sony Reader really is a godsend for me. The built in backlight is superb. I've currently got 187 books downloaded and there's still lots of capacity left on it. I like how it bookmarks the last page you read on every single book so, if you're like me and read a few books at a time on occasion, then it's a must have feature. There are five different text sizes available which is also nice. I've lost count of the number of people who come up to me when I'm reading this to check it out. Everyone is sold very quickly. Purchasing books at the Sony ebook store is a breeze. Downloads take just a few seconds and you're good to go.
Go with the Sony. You'll love it.

I didn't even know that the Sony one was available up here. I'm gonna go check that out right now.

Ok, I've checked it out and it looks very similar to the Kindle. Now I was wondering how much, on average, does it cost to buy a book?

^^^$11.99 for a new 'hardcover' stage ebook.
$7 is the average usual price.
However, Sony usually has a $1 book each month and free books from time to time. I downloaded 10 or so of them. They had a 100 free classics offer after purchase too.
booksonboard.com is another place to look. They have good deals at times too. You purchase the PDF format from them.

Sorry, I might sound dumb, but I just wanna wrap my head around how this would work. So, sony has its own store for books, but you can also go to other sites on the reader and purchase them there directly to the reader?

Sony has their own format which you purchase and download to your Sony ebook library on your computer. You can also read PDF's on the Sony Reader. You would purchase from the likes of booksonboard and download then to your computer using Adobe Digital Editions. Then you would transfer the book to your Reader. It's really quite easy once you've done it a couple of times.

Whats the scoop on the 500,000 google books? Are they ever going to be in Canada or is that a permanent issue?

Interesting story with the Kindle.
Yesterday some people discovered that Amazon deleted a few titles they had bought. People didn't even realize this could happen.
Quote:
The story first popped up when customers began crying foul on the Amazon community, and several sites covered it, including the NYTimes. What no one could determine for certain was "why" this was happening. Amazon's email to customers gave the impression that the publisher had a change of heart: "Although a rarity, publishers can decide to pull their content from the Kindle store." That didn't tell the whole story, however.

I can understand why it happened, but the fact that they even have this ability kind of irks me. What if George Lucas had this ability to pull copies of the original Star Wars and replace it with the newer version with alterations? Or pull text books to include Intelligent Design? Abilities like that just make me uneasy.
All new tech where you can lose what you believed you had puchased is, in my mind too much power.
