What's the best thing $10,000 can get me?

I am driving it across Canada in June...I will be in Calgary eventually.
'97 Civic LX
4 door Automatic
170,000 KM's
Will pass inspection and I justr spent $600 getting it ready for my big drive. It needed a couple bearings, brakes...standard stuff. Overall it is in decent shape with some dents, dings and rust.

There's a promotion on a 2008 Accent for 9,995. Lots of good reviews, no moonroof, but for a brand-new car with full warranty, that's a hella good deal.

I own a 2002 Hyundai Elantra. Bought it new from dealership. A used one would be in your price range. Its great on gas too. I haven't had any problems with it. No, I am not selling mine. It does have options like the sunroof you mentioned.
A previous poster mentioned a newer model Accent. This would be worth looking into as well.
Good Luck in your search.

That's the exact car I had as my last vehicle, I had 220,000 km on it with more dings than I could count, sold it for $3600 about 2.5 years ago.

The problem is people will still kick in your door. Even though they won't get in, having a kicked in door still sucks.

yeah, well, it was a design flaw.....nobody who owns a 3 was happy, but Mazda stepped up (after a while) and fixed the problem....what more can be done about it. When I was working as a mechanic, I could legally by a door jimmy...took all of about 5-10 seconds to get inside a car.....not much difference in my books.
The 3 is a great car, built on a solid platform that has been a big money maker for mazda

Yup, there is a big difference. If you own a civic, when you come out to your car there won't be a giant dent in it. Break in attempts on 3's are crazy high because of this problem.

I agree....but if someone wants in, they are going to get in....regardless of the way! this really wasnt a huge problem until it received air time on the news, and on boards like this...then every tom dick and punk knew about it.
Mazda puts the stickers on the windows, and you can always get an aftermarket alarm, most punks wont start smacking the door if they see the little light blinking in the dash.
Regardless, great little cars...

I'm selling a 2001 Mazda Protege (I think they became Mazda 3 in 2002 or 2003?). Anyways, it's an 'ES' so has the sport package , sunroof, spoiler, alloy rims, etc.

I'd suggest a 3. I have yet to have my door damaged. The paint is a little thin yes (kinda bugs me) but otherwise, not a single complaint. I've had the recall done, and the sticker is on my door letting all know that hitting the door in the right spot will not get an open door, but will set off an alarm instead. The Proteges are great too. Not as much power, but handle quite well from what I've heard, and the initial depreciation is bigger (that may seem like a con, but in my opinion, it means that a 6 year old Protege won't be overpriced whereas a 6 year old Civic might be, and a 6 year old Corolla definitely will be). As long as you don't look at a car as an investment (which nobody should really, that is NOT what they are) then you should be good.

Are they made in North America, or Japan?
I know lots of cars made in North America now have ty paint in order to meet tougher environmental regulations. Apparently the old process of painting with the good stuff is really bad for the air.

i bought an 03 Jetta for $10,000 in October. Not a bad car, still worry every so often that it will break down, but thats prob the case for any 5 year old used car.

I'm another Mazda 3 owner and I'm exteremly happy with my car. I've had the door problem fixed and the dealership I've dealt with up to this point has been very helpful. Above all, I absolutely love driving the car. It's easy to handle and economical on gas.
