I'm not sure what's on that video because I can't see it right now so I apologize if this post repeats anything from it:

My understanding is that memory at its best is associative. When I was in high school I took this 'Mega Memory' course and all it taught you to do was associate something with something else in order to remember it. That's probably why, 4x4, you can remember a dollar figure by thinking of something that costs that much.

When I studied anatomy in university the entire course was, essentially, memorization. So I would use association to remember body parts, but for other forms of memory - such as remembering the breakdown of a body part in order, I used mnemonics (I think that's what they said it was called). I'd take the first letter from each part to create an acronym and then invent a phrase based on the acronym to remember it.

What the impact of these techniques are on long-term memory I can't say - I DO know I remember very little of the rich complexity of anatomy 4 years later.

I have a co-worker who thinks numbers have genders.

4 is a girl number. 7 is male.

I mock him mercilessly.

Sounds like you've developed some handy mnemonics for remembering stuff short-term. Probably pretty useful on occasion.

Pretty disappointing if you ask me.

I remember a psyc reading way back when that proposed an interesting theory on why Asians seem to pick up math so much faster than their North American counterparts. Part of it had to do with their language and how they break down big numbers. The other part was how the text books are primarily written. Apparently in a lot of texts for youngsters the numbers are coloured (the values of ones, tens, hundreds etc. are all coloured differently).

Just a theory, but it seems interesting.

I think you just have found a way to encode things to memory differently. Not that unusual, just a strategy.

Absolutely.

Always a good discussion.

I definitely dream in colour - blondes, brunettes and red-heads.

The most common form of synesthesia is when people see or hear words in colour. The condition affects about 1 in 25 000 people and is found more commonly in women than men. There appears to be more left handed individuals among synesthetics than in the general population although the significance of this is unclear. Often synesthetics have exceptional memories, have a tendency to have unusual 'psychic' experiences, but have problems at maths or navigation.

Strange, everything in there is not me. Male, right handed, so-so memory, definitely not psychic, though there have been a couple of incidents that are noteworthy, very good math skills (notwithstanding last week's brainfart that Bobblehead so kindly reminded me of, and my navigation skills are (not to brag) stellar. In fact, regarding navigation, I usually play a game whenever I'm in a new city where I try to get lost. I simply cant. I can find my way back every time, unless I am drunk.

But I think in colour.

Also, from the link, I see the triangle of red twos clearly. Does anyone here not see it?

I pretend I am dialing numbers on the phone... it's like a practical memory thing.

I can, but only on the bottom card, not the top; but I think they are referring to the card above where the twos are not coloured. If you syne..(whatever) you can see the triangle on the card where all the characters are the same colour because you will see the twos in a different colour - like in the card beneath.

I think they mean in the first picutre, not the second one, because in the second one the 2's are actually red (either that or I have it too).
The second one is what someone with that condition would see, because the 2's would stick out against the 5's.

Hmmm.... Well, in the first one, all I see is black. But when I'm looking at something, I'm not picturing it in my head. This only takes place when I think about a number or letter.
