The funniest one I ever got was from Queensland Australia in a rental car. They sent it in the mail with the picture. I put it on my fridge and laughed and laughed. No, I didn't pay that one.

Given three construction workers were sent to hospital by some a-hole just two weeks ago, then I say more power to them. Nail every such clown to the wall.

As to the OP, if you were only going 8 over, then I would wonder if you will even get a ticket. I've never had any problems with the concept of "stay within 10 over the limit" and photo radar cameras.

I collected about five photo radar tickets in the span of a year a few years ago - all on Deerfoot or Bow Trail. I haven't gotten one since, as I have learned not to speed (too much) in the city.

So yeah, photo radar is a cash cow. But it is only so becuase people are stupid. I chose not to be one of those stupid people anymore.

Wasn't there something on the news last year about a stretch of highway in Rocky View where they started mailing out tickets for something like 2K over the limit?

It's just a rule of thumb. You're unlikely to get a ticket under 10 km/hr over the limit, but I wouldn't count on it. A friend of mine just told me about a coworker who got one 10 km over the limit.

Be aware that your speedo may not be accurate. If you're going 8 km/hr over and it's registering 5 km/hr under, watch your mail for the ticket.

It's not like there is a shortage of construction zones in this city they could be setting up in...

They've been all over the Nose Hill/Crowchild construction in the last couple months. I'm a self admitted speeder, but not in construction zones, especially with workers present.

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned there are two places on the road where I want them to have Photo Radar set up. In school zones during lunch hour, or just after school, even like a half hour before school starts and in construction zones when workers are present. If the idea is truely to make people drive the speed limit than make it a visible presence in speed zones like this where the likelyhood of someone getting seriously hurt is increased, and in those zones I don't mind if they have a stricter tolerance since people don't have to drive 60 in a construction zone with workers present.

I thought they (the police) allowed a 10 km buffer (except in play ground zones) to account for variations in speedometers (2 km over is ridiculous - even the camera might not be perfectly calibrated).

I got a photo radar ticket in Edson, Alberta last summer. EDSON! 12 over.

If this is currently happening in Calgary, I would be interested in a link for confirmation as to your news story. If you are talking about what is happening in Surrey BC right now, that little tidbit should have been included in your post, I believe.

I don't mind them doing this but only if they do it in legitimate construction zones and not bogus ones like you mentioned. They'll probably get all tricky and do it around corners or where views are obstructed and move it all over the city where you don't expect any construction.

So my co-worker produced his ticket today for 6 over the limit...it was actually 10 over the limit. So if I get one in the mail for 8 over, I will be surprised. It was a work vehicle I was driving, so I'll gladly pay any ticket up to 8 over the limit...any more than that and work is going to have to get the vehicle's speedometer calibrated before I fork over any cash to them.

Same here. The lower speed limit should be lifted if there aren't any workers around at night. Who wants to drive 50km/h on a 80+ road at night?

That is how they will most likely do the radar, hidden and in areas such as those you mentioned. Legitimate construction zones and visibility will not fill the financial pockets for them. They will probably have camo out to fit in with the surrounding area as well for further disguise.

My only Photo Radar was a few months after I got my license. I was driving in a new area and hit a playground zone on a major road. 67 in a 30 zone when I didn't really have any income... cured me of my speeding at an early age.

If you speed in a construction zone, you deserve a ticket. If I had my way every construction zone would have multi nova every 100m.

I've gotten a couple picture tickets in my day... none recently though. I don't think any were as low as 8 over, but none were as high as 30 over either. And yes, I paid them all.

In my much younger days I am sad to say I had more than my fair share of tickets, and was fortunate not to have more. I had (and still have) a Honda Nighthawk 750 and once, many moons ago, tried to see how fast it would go down Crowchild trail. The speedo goes to 240... and it will do every bit of it. No, I didn't get a ticket for that, but when the speed shakes start, the heart skips a beat or two. For some reason I always had songs like "Blaze of Glory" going through my head.... dumbass kids.

The worst ticket I ever got was in my Triumph TR7 convertible. Georgous summer day in the mid 80s and I saw the cop pull in behind me on 53rd street. He followed me for about 12 blocks, through at least 2 stop signs and 1 set of lights. I made sure I came to a complete stop for every single one and never even came close to going over the speed limit. About a half block from my house, he flips the lights on and pulls me over, giving me a ticket for a burnt out tail light. I asked him, in a not so polite voice, why it took him 12 long blocks to figure out I had a burnt out tail light... he never responded. As he was writing up the ticket, my sister leaves the house and sees me, laughing all the way I'm sure. Now I'm really pissed so when he brings the ticket back and goes through the whole explaining crap, I grab it, crumple it up and throw it on the floor. "Anything else?" I ask. He smiled, shook his head and slowly walked back to his cruiser.

Yes, I paid the ticket... but no, I wasn't very happy about it. And no, before the ticket I did not kno w I had a burnt out tail light.

Pfft. Once he gives me the ticket, it is mine to do with as I please. I didn't litter, just crumpled it up and threw in on the floor of my car. I never swore, didn't spit on him, etc. etc.

I remember watching one of the "Cops" type shows once where some guy went absolutely bat-e crazy over a ticket, ripped it and threw it in the cops face. The cop calmly suggested he pick up the pieces or he'd cite him for littering... funny stuff watching the guy freak out, pick up his pieces of ticket in front of the cop, get back in his vehicle... only to have the cop say "you missed a piece" and the guy had to get back out again. I lol'd.

I have the greatest respect for the cops and the job they do. Hell, my best man was a cop, my next door neighbor is a sarg with the RCMP, the neighbor across the street is an RCMP.... I just thought that this cop saw a young punk in a nice convertible and wanted to follow him for awhile waiting for said young punk to mess up. When young punk didn't mess up, he dinged him for the only thing he had, which was a measly $20 (or something) for a burnt out tail light. It just really ticked me off because I KNEW he was back there following me, then he pulls me over basically right beside my house, and basically for nothing.
