Asia - one of my favorite bands. I love progressive rock.
The Alan Parson's Project - some great songs
Simple Minds - Pegged as a one hit wonder, but they really weren't
a-ha - They are still together to this day and making great music. It doesn't have a new wave sound, but definitely unique. I guess they aren't really classic rock though and many only know them as a one hit wonder. If anyone is interested, I have a lot of songs to recommend. Drop me a line.
Genesis (sans Gabriel) - I liked their sound better with Collins singing lead.
Heart - as mentioned before by Dis, a great band! They put on an amazing show last fall at the Jub. Nancy and Ann still sound fantastic.
Talk Talk - Love them. But again, not really classic rock and not many seem to know about them.
I keep thinking of more!
Not a band, but Pat Benatar. An outstanding rocker who paved the way for many female artists.

"Your Love" is one of the most under appreciated songs (IMO). You can crank it and sing your lungs of to it...definitely a personal favorite.

I was trying so hard to avoid the geek traps, I always fall for the geezer trap.

I don't think David Bowies earlier works(Pinups, Ziggy Stardust and even Diamond Dogs) got the recognition they deserved.
Ten Years After definately

Also agree with Dion on Chilliwack.
There's a great podcast out there by these two guys in New York that call themselves The Rocktologists. They put together some great playlists which are all available at their website www.therocktologists.com; just click "Archive". I'd recommend their "Oh Canada, Eh?" set from July 2, 2006.

I would second Steely Dan, The Band, Allman Brothers, J Geils Band, Yes, and Jethro Tull and would add the following:
Savoy Brown
Foghat
Humble Pie
The Faces
Fairport Convention
The Marshall tucker Band
Big Star
Midnight Oil
The Payolas
Slade

I know they do get some recognition, but not like they deserve. They were not inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame until 2 years ago. Considering songs like free bird they should be held up there with the greats, but are often overlooked.

Max Webster/Kim Mitchell
this one is a bit more obscure, but Sweeney Todd -- a Canadian "glam" band from Vancouver. First frontman was Nick Gilder, who left and was replaced by a 16 year old Bryan Adams. They won a Juno in 1976(?) for Single Of The Year ("Roxy Roller"). Their songs "Wishes Were Horses" and "Tantalize" are pretty good tracks.

Not enough recognition?
There are revered as gods in the States.
But as far as a "great" band, I think they are vastly overhyped. Like many artists that died before they should of, Van Zant (and others) have become immortalized for something other than their actual body of work.

Some awesome mentions in this thread. Would have to agree with Yes, (fragile is a killer, killer album) Zappa, Dire Straits, Steely Dan, and David Bowie's material will always be relevant and influential.
I would have to say out of the classic rock bands not mentioned... Mahavishnu Orchestra and Mountain.
