As for Favre, not trying to come down on the guy, but I just have to pose this question. Last week Favre said that his decision to come back next year depended on what the Packers did in UFA(which IMO was pretty bush. He's got a great WR core, solid run game, top 5 D, and even arguably the best P and K in the game. He's on a Super Bowl contender, why pull this "ransom" crap?). He also said for the 2nd year in a row that he really wants Randy Moss. Yesterday Moss signs with the Patriots. Today Favre retires. Coincidence?
I'm not saying this is for sure why he retired, but its certainly curious timing, considering his remarks last week. I'd really hope a legend such as him wouldn't retire over something so petty.
I don't think it is a coincidence at all. First thought that entered my mind when I heard that Favre had retired.
Brett was a class act and one of the best QB's to play on and off the field. Congrats on a great career. I think he still had atleast a year left in him though so i'm a little surprised. Rodgers QB now? That should be interesting.
Hopefully we get some more down the road. The 'technical' QB's are great and they win games, but there's nothing more exciting than a QB putting a team on his shoulders and willing them to win. Not sure there's anyone in the game that can do that anymore.
People will say Brady, but he has a ridiculous team around him.
You know what, Drew Brees might fit that description prett well now that I think about it.

Perhaps Carson Palmer; although it is hard to tell with the circus around him.

Brett was a special breed. He is a Hall of Famer, two-time superbowl champion and NFL's all time Passing leader. I loved how that guy had so much fun but knew when to put-up or shut-up. Now is a good time for him, leaving on somewhat of a high. I don't really see any players like him except maybe Eli and his ability to get it done. But, with Eli, he will have to become better with age and stay injury free. Actually, if he can win one more, he'll have a lot in common with Brett.
I digress, this is a thread about Favre. Seemingly, people seem to forget that when he won those first two championships he had quite the talent to work with: Levens, Sharpe, the Minister of Defence. It wasn't the greatest but they still had talent, kinda like the Giants this year. They paralell because of the players: Jacobs/Levens, Two blue collar Olines, Strahan/White, Burress/Sharpe. Hmm, I still don't think that Eli has the arm brett did though, but who does? Roethlisberger? Palmer? Russel? Manning Sr? Those guys may have arms like cannons but there are other intangibles that go along with it and I think one was alluded to earlier, "will to win". Determination is a gigantic factor that can be a difference maker, ask Tom Brady.
Congrats on it all Brett, you have love in CAlberta. He was part of the reason I will always be a Pack fan first in the NFL. Cheese heads or bust baby.
PS, I think that pic was when Jennings caught that Bomb in OT this last season. Highlighting another reason why I love this guy, he was as colourblind as he was classy.

?
You may went to check on that.....

Well suffice to say that Im a bit disappointed but not at all surprised.
I had no doubt he was likely to retire this year much more than the last 2 regardless of last years success. This os one year where I watched and he looked like he was playing hurt. Not that he hadnt done that before, but this year it "looked" like he was hurting.
The man has accomplished everything the game had to offer including proving his critics of the last couple years dead wrong.
The one quote I saw from him was something along the lines of "im just mentally tired. Im just tired."
I can live with that reason as should anyone who loves the NFL. He had earned the right to come back lat year and he has earned the right to call it a career today.
His record speaks for itself, yet Packer nation will mourn his departure. As they should....he was one of a kind and will always be the best player to ever pull the pads on as a Packer.
(This almost feels like an obituary...its a 38 YO guy who has had a blast playing a game and got wealthy doing so...how strange)
I actually see a lot of Elway in Favre...or vice versa.
That SB victory over GB was very satisfying because I knew we were beating a great team. The next year felt like a formality.
I love Favre.

^but you're a bronco's fan. Hmm. I see a better pocket QB in Elway, but I like Brett's charisma. I bet it was satisfying to beat them. Man am I bitter. Still, how many years later?

11 years now.
You're bitter? I had to sit through 4 blow out losses before that day!!
Elway was pretty darn good out of the pocket...in fact, I'd say he was better out than in.

Out? Really? I don't know about that. He was good at recognizing the pocket collapsing, which rarely happened with that o-line. He was athletic, could get you a first if nothing was available and there was no flat coverage. But better out of the pocket? wow, he was an amazing, cannon for an arm, QB. I can't remeber him being all that fast though. Not saying Brett is, but I like Brett's moxie a lil' more.
And you're bitterness is a little more concentrated I see. I'll give it to you since I have changed my fan status as far as the NFL is concerned, dam salary cap. Even though the cap helps teams like the pack, it sure sees that there is, sometimes, too much roster turnover.

So what's your thought on Rodgers? He looked decent in one game last year but hasn't looked that great other times. One thing that would scare the hell out of me is that he was coached by Jeff Tedford in college....

When did you watch Elway?
In his later years he had a great line and didn't have to scramble.
The first decade he was practically Fran Tarkenton (not as scrambly mind you).

I've heard alot of sportscasters say that Romo is the next Favre. I'm not so sure it's because of his playing style or its because they both have connections to Wisconsin. Either way, this makes my Packers, the youngest NFL team last year, that much younger. And they still almost made it to the SB. Should be interesting watching Rodgers at the helm next season. He looked pretty good in a couple of his appearances last season.
OTOH, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he changed his mind and came back to play next season.
The one quote I saw from him was something along the lines of "im just mentally tired. Im just tired."
I read a quote from him today that talked about how only winning the Super Bowl would've made this upcoming season a success for him, and that's just too lofty a goal to realistically strive from when you're his age and his point in his career. I'll see if I can find it...
Here we go:
Quote:
"If I felt like coming back -- and Deanna (Favre's wife) and I talked about this -- the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl," Favre told ESPN. "To go to the Super Bowl and lose, would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful."
It's great that he can go out on his own terms, but that sounds more like someone who's trying to convince himself to retire than someone who is DEF-IN-ITE-LY retiring.

His college days wont have any effect moving forward though...he's been behind Brett for 3 years and should know by now what it takes to be an NFL'er.
Who knows how he is going to be? There just isnt a lot to go on. I just remember he was projected a top 5 pick and fell into the Packers lap at 25 (IIRC) and they had no option but to snag him there.
The one thing I do like about him is he is familiar with the west coast hybrid the Packers play which should suit him. All that being said the Packers will probably use their 3rd rd pick on a QB. John David Booty has been suggested.
As for Favre coming back....sure its possible. Not sure why he chose to decide this so soon after the season, and that may lend some credence to this being a bit premature.
