You either have very good or very poor sleep progresson then. Normal sleep patterns will have you progress from stage 1,2,3,4 then REM then 4,3,2,1 back and forth about 4 times a night, if you wake up before exiting stage 4 or 3 then you can remember your dreams.
|
I wake up at least once every night.
edit* wait a minute. If you wake up before exiting the 3rd or 4th stage, you CAN remember them. That's not adding up then. :/

Note you go 1,2,3,4 REM then 4,3,2,1 so it's on the exit..
Stage 1 is generally near wakefulness so waking up isn't uncommon. I had this guy from the Calgary Sleep Institue come talk to my Bio-Med class about the EEG signals produced in the different stages of sleep. Heh..

I do it often and I can control what happens, but I can't decide on the theme going into the dream. I just take it as it comes and go from there. It's mostly doing things that would give me a heart attack though like crashing a giant bus into the subway or something...

Well, that part makes sense then because I know I used to be able to remember dreams when I was a kid. Every time I would awake and would remember them but they never really had an ending, so that adds up. Now I'm wondering about waking up once or twice a night though. Is that a good thing or not? Am I sleeping until the dream stage ends, then awaking, then repeating the process?
How long does is generally take to advance through the full stage?

Sometimes, in the middle of a dream I'll realize I'm dreaming and it's a huge relief or a major disappointment. I'm always me when I dream and I suppose I can control my actions, although what I decide to do in a dream I would probably never do in real life.

I remember about 2 or 3 dreams a year.
I kind of wish I remembered my dreams more often, usually I get a pretty good kick out of them.
And I definitely can't control them.

dreams are awesome, i dont think i can controll mine, but things usually workout how i would want them too so maybe i can. I usually remember atleast 3 of my dreams a week sometimes more. I find the earlier i get up the more dreams i remember.

Each stage is about 90 minutes, at least I think that was what the guy had told me.

Apparently for some people, if you are woken up or wake up for some reason while in REM sleep, you are momentarily paralyzed. It's supposedly pretty terrifying. I don't know if I remember completely, but it has something to do with your body paralyzing itself in REM sleep so that it does not get up and move around. But apparently when this happens, it's very scary.
It's never happened to me, but has anyone else experienced this?

When you guys that claim to be able to control your dreams, in what context? Are you cognisant of what is going on in your dreams as you would be in real life, or do you play the part of an observer who can control the action of what is going on? When I dream I am always there as an observer and stand outside of myself, watching the action take place. How would one control the action in this regard? And when you do control them, are you just controlling the action of the dream, or can you select in advance what you are going to dream that night?

I have dreams they are a mix between the type you speak of and first person. The few times I could control them it was first person, and the first thing I would do everytime is fly. Funnest thing ever.. I need to get me a jet pack.

Hulk, how do you do it? Do you plan what you are going to dream, or do you just react and assume control during your dream?

when I used to be able to control my dreams it was always first person (but I do have observer dreams but never ones I could control) It was reactionary, I figured out I was in a dream, and then woo-hoo super powers!

You can kind of set what you dream about before you go to sleep. What I have found is if, before you go to sleep, think about what you want to dream about, and it usually will happen.
The dreams which you remember, usually take place 10-15 minutes before you wake up. So that could be why you are able to somewhat control the dream, becuase you are not completely sleeping, but not completely awake.

Its usually been that where I am, what I'm doing are just sort of random, and then I realize at some point I'm able to do as I wish. The first thing I always have done is fly. Except one time I had to escape out of a cage first. Then I flew around as soon as I got out.

The one dream I had control of was in first person. I was floating, and realized it must be a dream. So once I figured out how to control myself, I took a fly around downtown Calgary and the Saddledome. I still remember the feeling clearly, it was an amazing dream.

my problem was I'd realize I was dreaming and start to fly, then I'd realize "people can't fly" and I'd crash.... wouldn't hurt would be like when you crash in a flight simulator. You see the ground, and skid, but you don't feel anything. I'd have trouble flying after that.

It seems like I have 4-5 dreams that I have over and over again (they can have the same ending or a different one)

just curious, since we're talking about dreaming
I haven't had a nightmare in like 10-15 years... do you grow out of them?
