Maybe it's just me, but I find posting exact dollar figures of salary amounts (and turning down six figures no less) to be a little pretentious and too much information, but maybe it doesn't bug other people.

I just find talking about dollar amounts with strangers like that is odd.

Deciding to work on commission can be scary. I started it 6 years ago and the first year was tough. New owners of a new company that had formally been run into the ground. But I knew that the partners were very sharp and it would be just a matter of time until things turned around. Currently things couldn't be better and I am glad I stuck it out through the lean times.

The downside is not having a guaranteed salary. That hasn't been a problem or concern for a few years. But I always keep money tucked away just in case. The plus side is not punching a clock. Show up when you want to, leave when you want, take time off when you need to. If you slack off though it will hurt your pocket book, so its really easy to stay motivated.

Knowing the poster I don't find it pretentious or too much info at all.

Even if I didn't know the poser I doubt that I would find anything wrong with posting the info considering the thread topic. A salary like that for most people would be hard to turn down and fits in with the topic of turning down a dream job.

I had a dream job for 4 summers and could have worked their one more year, but I got a big head and refused an offer to return unless my list of demands were met. I still regret it to this day - it wasnt the future for me, but it was (and probably will be) the best job I ever had.

if sales is in your blood , come sell timeshares.... people at my work are making 150,000 plus....... of course as with any great salesman they have the ability to bend the truth to its breaking point.... myself am too morally concious so i dont make nearly as much as everyone else but i do ok

Hmm... I've never had to bend the truth to sell. I have a moral obligation to myself to be truthful (good old up-bringing). I've had great success with my style of selling. I'm not pushy or anything actually, I just make my product the best possible choice. It comes down to basically having a genuine love for what you are selling, (to me anyway) and I think as long as you have that and people can see that, you've got a pretty good tactic.

I recall back in younger days I worked at sport check and I could sell anything in that store I was top 5 in sales person in Alberta for one of the 6 months a worked there and I was always in the top 10

Everyone sells, if you can't sell, your career no matter what you do is going to be short lived.

The only place that you wouldn't sell is as a janitor, oh wait they have to sell too.

I always laugh at people that say that they can't sell. Show me a person that can't sell their ideas, or concepts, and I'll show you a person who's career never ever advances, and is looked at with disdain by any organizations owners, or president or CEO.

You might have brilliant ideas, but if you can't sell them, they never become reality.

Oh, and the day and age of the Herb Tarlick sales person is dead. Sales is about more then just steam rolling objections and lying. Sales is about creating a proof of concept, illustrating a stronger return on investment then your competitors, and working with your clients to turn their requirements or needs into a reality that fits their business or personal needs.

A sales person that lies, doesn't sell for very long.

People like me usually sell them on the idea of continuing their career elsewhere . . . forcefully.

I think he means for a profession, not on a socially-specified level.

I swore myself to never become a salesperson for a living, simply because if it's based off of commission there's no guaranteed salary. Plus, pushing things onto people, and in specific, cold calling, really aggravated me.

I did a sales / telemarketing job in New Zealand - lasted all of one day before I told them where to stick it. Too much pressure to sell, sell, sell and work your butt off for little success; what's the point? There's easier, less stressful ways to make money - and just as much, to be honest.

I'm not saying sales is bad; it's just not for me in any way. And I'm a business graduate. But, I also guess it depends on what you're selling that will make you more passionat about what you do. I don't know if I could constantly stand rejection and no knowing when my next dollar is coming in!

I have been working in my dream job for over eight years now. Being here doesn't feel like work because I love it. Had to go back to school for a few years in order to get it. Meant giving up the job I had with no idea how things would turn out. Money was pretty scarse while in school but the sacrifice was worth it. Glad I took the risk!.
