Last night I had to drive up to 16th ave to drop something off for my girlfriend her grandparents house is right by Peter's drive in so I thought I would be a nice guy and pick up a shake for my three roommates and I
I got my favorite, but from there I got 3 standard flavors (raspberry, blueberry, and strawberry) when I got home everyone was delighted, I said which flavors I have and my one roommate takes the one I said was raspberry and says "wait this isn't raspberry you idiot"
Right after I bought him a shake...

And that's when I would have taken the shake from his hand, walked to the sink and washed it down the drain after saying "I don't get free shakes for unappreciative dicks."

You do know that you're judged by the company you keep?
I would have shot out their other tire and left them behind.

In Norwegian we have a specific term for this -- "bear favour". Don't do any favours for a bear because he'll just end up eating you...

I have worked for the Health Region for ~10 years and am constantly going out of my way to help people and then being told how useless the system is (with blame directed at me) or being questioned as to why i am trying to NOT help the very person i am helping. Often being loudly/aggressively YELLED at or berated. And often times having the same cycle happen a dozen or more time in a shift, intersperesed with crazy psycho (literally) calls.
People seem to think that:
1) Doctors are/should be at their beck and call, have no families or time of their own yet are totally a 'free' service?
2) That no ones privacy matters (except their own!).
3) That their health problems are all life treatening (unless it is someone else, in which case those persons problems are 'typical' and their problems take precedence)
4) That despite answering machines and 'call pilots' being used in virtually every other industry on earth, and likely even the patients own business/employer, THEY are not required to leave a message or navigate a menu and deserve special treatment/an exemption.
So i hold their hand all the way through the process, often working through my breaks or past my shift time (with no chance of a raise or something for doing good work because my wages are locked into a pay scale), and they turn around and blame me for their problems.
Of course i know that the pressure of their medical problems are likely a huge cause, but everyone has problems (including me) and since you asked about people being ungreatful....
The brutal part is that the REALLY sick people i deal with, the ones who WILL die shortly of cancer or diabetes/renal failure or whatever and/or their families are often the MOST understanding and sweet people. It seems to always be the minor medical problem and/or self inflicted problem people that are the worst. Heavy smokers in the hospital from smoking complaining about not being able to smoke inside the doors (at a hospital no less!) on a cold day or the hugely obese complaining about there being no milk shakes in the cafeteria or that their are not enough double-size wheelchairs sitting around! Sad....

Thats why my mom stopped being a triage nurse and went back to the pacemaker clinic.. People are constantly blaming you for the sad state of the healthcare system.. You forgot to mention the people who show up with the sniffles or a sore throat getting mad when you make them wait 7 hours to be seen.. Sorry buddy I forgot your stupid affliction is way more important than the guy with the broken leg, or the old women with chest pain..

And i think the system is WAY better for most people then most Canadians realize.
The rich are better off in the States for sure, but most everyone else? No way! And the biggest misunderstanding is around wait lists. Study after study shows that most patients do not benefit from care taking place a week or two earlier. Sure the waiting sucks, but the reason is that urgent cases go first, then less urgent, then non-urgent. So you wait not because every space between you and your date is full but because people who literally NEED to be seen are seen first. Imagine being stuck with some horrible American-HMO, with zero choice, with a somewhat urgent matter, but being stuck at the back because whomever pays first goes first?! Brutal. The system is NOT that bad if you have a bit of patience, take a deep breath, and realize there is probably a fairly noble reason for the way most things are....

Agreed.. Its universal health care, since when is anything ran by the government completely efficient..? It sure beats dealing with insurance companies that will do anything under the sun to avoid covering you. Americans realize their healthcare system is a disaster. Its really only a matter of time until they adopt a similar system. Most people think whatever they have has got to be the worst case senario, alot of them fail to understand how waiting lists work.. The sick get preference, you can wait if your not in failing health..

Amen bubby. I'm not really suppose to post on blogs and forums on this stuff since I'm on the government end of health, but I agree that the front line health workers, the ones that deal with the public are really under appreciated for all the work that they do, and more importantly, what they put up with.
I see correspondence everyday from people that write into the Ministry, while some good, there are those that I have to scratch my head about. In one case, an individual tried to use some sort of financial analysis why his toothache was more important to be looked over the other people that were seen before him for the duration that he was waiting for. I can only imagine what it’s like to be directly dealing with the angry public. To close with a more diplomatic touch, we do get correspondence from people that really take the time to write, either thanking a particular health worker or hospital, or spreading some positive message. Those really positives ones are something we really appreciate

Deoxyribonucleic Acid, for example... sounds impressive, right? But have you ever seen what happens if you put something in acid? It dissolves! If we had all this acid in our cells, we'd all dissolve! So much for the Theory of Evolution, Check MATE!

Not quite the same, as I wasn't dissed by the person I was doing a good deed for...and something very small and petty...
I was standing in concession line (2nd from back) at the 'Dome. A 12 year old kid walks in front of me and drops a $10 bill. I grab it, step out of line to go catch up to him and hand him back the bill. I walk the couple steps back to the line and the people behind me stepped up...I kind of approached...they looked me over...and creeped up closer to those in front of them, making plenty of room for me behind them...Yea, okay, it was just a little annoyance, and not on the same level as others, but it was enough to piss me off and remember it. I suppose I'm a little messed up if things that small bother me...ha...ha...

my favourite is when you thank someone and they give you a blank stare. They feel pretty dumb when I tell them "The proper response to that is You're welcome".

For some reason doors I always have problems with. Not that it affects me in any way, but your post made me think about it a bit. Typically if I don't know someone (i.e. on campus) I will walk through the door myself, and hold it open behind me for the person behind me (I think everyone does this). Thinking about handicap people, I always feel like I should help them more so than others, but I'm in a sense always nervous about getting into a situation like you did EG.
|
I am one that typically will wait a little if there is a person not directly behind, but fairly close, I'll wait and hold it open to be polite. I've always done that for everyone. That's what I did for him, but he assumed I was doing it because he was in a wheelchair and therefore I thought he needed special attention. I was so embarrassed. Certainly a moment that made me think, "Why the heck do I even try?" I still do it, but wow, that moment will be forever burned in my mind.
It sucks when you try to do something nice for someone and they turn around and make you feel like a giant anus.

reminds me of this one person i knew who told me they've been to the ER 7 times in less then a year, mostly for colds coughs sniffles etc. The person had 1 semi legitimate problem which was a sprained wrist.
No freaking wonder the emergency rooms back up and these people with minor injuries complain because they have to wait for hours to get taken care of, I understand if it's a small child but if you're 20 and have a slight fever and a cough take a tylenol and go to bed already.
I've been to the ER 3 times in the last say 17 years, each time i was taken care of within the hour because I actually had a legitimate serious/semi-serious problem.
You go to the ER when you have a emergency not having a hard time sleeping. Last time I was there with my fiance and this broad came in because she was gardening and got some dirt in her eye, she was demanding she be seen ahead of everyone else because "she could go blind", so triage nurse asks her if she tried flushing it out. "uhhhh no" Freaking stupid people.
