Not only is there a religious left, which has undergone a recent revival, the U.S. has a proud history of progressive evangelical politics. I've said this before, but most abolitionists were evangelicals. Slavery literally would not have been ended in the U.S. were it not for their ability to appeal to people's religious and moral sensibilities.

Add to that list any number of brilliant American thinkers who were also people of faith--Ralph Waldo Emerson comes to mind immediately.

That statement is a two edged sword because if you look deeply into the reasons the South used for promoting slavery was that they believed that African Americans were descendants of Cain and that their dark skin was the Curse of Cain. There were also many other ways the Southerners used their religion to prove that African Americans were less than human and did not deserve to be treated as such.
