This game is getting ripped for its DRM.

Apparently you are allowed to install it 3 times. You get no credit for uninstalling the game. If you use up the 3 then you can call EA and explain to them how you used up the 3 installs and ask for ONE more install.

Bioshock had the same issue if I recall. Didn't they eventually get rid of the drm via update?

You know... I can live without this game until the bloody DRM is relaxed. I refuse to spend $50 on a piece of software that I can only install 3 times in my life.

I know most of the Unreal Tournament series initially came out with DRM (required by the publisher) but the first patch removed it. However, in this case, I'm guessing EA won't even acknowledge the issue.

And I think this is crazy - I still have Diablo and I've installed it an uninstalled it more than 3 times. Ditto with a number of other games. I was interested in seeing how the latest Wil Wright game played, but I guess I won't be trying it until it hits the bargain bin.

It really boggles my mind how companies don't realize that putting DRM measures like the ones described here (limited number of installs) and others (validating online every X number of days online) make a certain portion of the purchasing population go out of their way to not purchase a game.

It amazes me even more that they continue to bother with it at all. It is a pretty simple translation that if your game is good, you will sell lots of copies. The people that steal it aren't going to suddenly throw their money at you simply because now they have to wait a whole week for a crack to come out for you scheme. I think that Sins of a Solar Empire proved that you can have a good game without DRM sell really well.

All this being said, I'll probably wait until Spore is in the bargain bin as well. I'm interested in how the game plays, but from all I've heard it's an awesome art package with 5 mediocre games attached to it and I'm not creative enough to get off on that (for 60 bucks).

Good thing I held of. Haven't really heard anything positive about this game so far to make me buy it. I got bored with games like The Sims quite easily. By the sounds of it, I might be the same way with Spore.

One gamer who spoke with me under the promise of anonymity put it best as he canceled his preorder: "I don't pay $50 for a broken version of a game. If EA wants to reward the pirates with the best version of the game, why wouldn't we get the better version [of Spore]?"

which is why i have no qualms about pirating in a case like this. i can either download a copy of the game with no invasive protection software, or pay for a version with DRM headaches that can take away from the game itself. pretty easy decision

pretty silly that the more game companies try to get tough with their anti-piracy measures, they just turn away more legitimate customers who would rather get the pirated version that WILL come out regardless and avoid the hassle

The reason why we don't put copy protection on our games isn't because we're nice guys. We do it because the people who actually buy games don't like to mess with it. Our customers make the rules, not the pirates. Pirates don't count,

and that was one of the best selling rts games of the past while if i remember correctly, funny how that works. kinda sucks too, i was going to buy Spore because the online stuff looked pretty neat, but there's no way i'm gonna plop down $60 just so i can get bent over by EA
