As someone who generally snubs mainstream music, I wish that more Grammy awards were like this; it actually held my attention throughout most of the show. The decision to pair modern performers with classic all the way along was excellent. Low-points were Kanye West's momma song, which really had the feel of a grade 8 mothers' day project to it, and Tina Turner's silver-clad, asymmetrical nipples. And I'm happy that Herbie Hancock took home the biggest award of the night; very classy and humble man, working in a genre that gets far to little credit by the awards bodies. That said, I doubt that his album was even the best jazz album of the year, but it had just the right main-stream twist to make it a fit.

Who told you that her work is "over compressed"? Are you talking about her vocals being "over compressed" or the beats/music? Please explain.. I'd really like to know where you got that information from.

Best version of the Prayer is Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.

Next - Celine Dion and Josh Groban, he was only 17 the first time he sang it with her, was filling in for Bocelli who for some reason or other, could not make the performance

Next - Josh Groban and Charlotte Church, simply not as powerful as Dion and Bocelli though, of course Groban and Church are considerably younger artists and at the point of the recording, very young in terms of developing their musical voices

Next - Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli

Don't get me wrong, Groban and Bocelli did an OK job, to me, sounded rushed though, and I just don't think The Prayer presents itself as nice with two male artists as it does with a female artist and a male artist.

Just about all pop artists produce music that gets thrown through audio compressors. I don't know the technical details but what happens is that all the empty space in a sound wave gets filled. This results in sound that supposedly is more "loud" and impressive. But really what happens is the nuances between the instrumentals and vocals gets blended together creating a bland uniform sound. Great for mixing I suppose, but for actually hearing the voice and music, it's awful.

Just about every major studio release is "compressed" these days. It's assumption on my part, but I think it's fairly safe for me to do so.

These days, you can't tell if a singer can actually sing properly until they get into a live situation. For a good example, see Avril Lavingne.

edit:
btw, I'm not commenting on Fergie's work. Just that I was impressed she could actually sing.

The grammy's? Seriously, people watch that?

Some people just don't know how to spend their own time.

I see what you meant to say. I think it's common knowledge for major labels to do things like this with pop artists and whatnot.

I think I'm using the right term, but I'm not too sure. "Compression" is used to describe way too many things in the music biz these days

Kanye West? Seriously? The guy is a horrible singer and saves his ass with over the top dramatics.
Of course he's a horrible singer - He's a rapper. Meaning... He raps.

Last night further proved how egotistical West is. The presenters, winners and performers took shots at him for his post-grammy loss comments in years previous.

And that shot of him before the announcement of album of the year was flat out embarrassing.

I enjoyed the Beatles Stuff. Where the hell was the lack of Springsteen in the top album category - I thought he was a Grammy shoo-in. Why no love for Radiohead in the alternative category?

Overall I thought it was good. Liked Alicia Keys\Frank Sinatra. Really liked Kanye... until Stronger ended... after that he was plain annoying. The Beatles feature was good. Fergie\John Legend sounded pretty good. Foo Fighters rocked.

I've seen far worse.

I just love the hypocracy of it all. For example, wasn't it just a few years ago before she made it "big" in the US that Nelly Fertato was chastizing the industry in a song claiming that magazines were lightening her skin to make her "whiter than it seems" only to see her presenting with bleach blonde hair! I couldn't stop laughing!
