And the automobile industry is only just gearing up to go after this harder. Every manufacturer, including the most blatant and obvious polluters you can think of, are devoting considerable chunks of the marketing budget to making their cars at least appear to be green, even if it's still a guzzling 6000 pound luxury-liner or a 2-seater that gets 15 miles a gallon.

And Mercedes with an expanding line of "clean diesel" cars, which are cleaner, but they are still diesel, and they are still used to power mostly very large cars and SUVs.
It's just lip service to the environment. The Beemer will be given to some celebrities first so they can, presumably, feel better about themselves while they drive a 150 thousand dollar boat down the street.
But at least there is some vague "awareness".

And the people who are ignoring the problem will be long dead before the major consequences are felt.
I can plant failsafe bombs set to go off in 2208 and be fairly certain that I won't be up on murder charges. Because the people I kill will only be dead long after I am. I haven't read that "is time travel possible" thread cause I think we really need it.
For the monkeys that we are, we really can't be expected to think about consequences that will happen 100 years from now. That monkey inside of us is far too concerned with hookers and blow.

I cant tell if this post is serious. Youre a vegetarian for the environment? Wowzas.
Im with Captain - I met Suzuki briefly through a school sponsored convention and I thought he was a complete jacka**. Comments like the ones in this article confirm it. I wonder if he's starting to get a bit loonie.

We ELECT these people to represent us. Keep that in mind here people. They do all they can to get re-elected. If they do nothing about the environment it could been seen that they are acting in OUR interest....so maybe we all don't really care??? Draw-back to democracy, politicians tend to act to keep their jobs ..

Suzuki should be saying things to make him more mainstream, not more radical and extreme.

Absolutely.
It is incredible the amount of resources - energy, water, land - required for a meat-based diet. Add to that the incredible amount of animal waste that goes untreated into the environment, the amount of methane being produced by cattle, the amount of forest being cleared....
As for Suzuki, I'm sure someone is going to point me to all the threads smashing Rush Limbaugh for saying stupid things when denying global warming. Or maybe, just maybe, there is a bias going on here. We're not going to call on Rush Limbaugh calling people who believe in global warming "envirowackos". But we're damn well going to rip anyone who speaks out demanding action on global warming.
To those saying he should be more mainstream and tone it down, the Liberal party was mainstream and toned down for over a decade and did absolutely . In the words of Supertramp:

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
Liberal, fanatical, criminal.

Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

Don't forget his 2 or is it three mansions which are all perfectly green I am sure.
I met the man myself and boy my delusions of the man were gone in one big mouthful of bile. Quite a shock to see the real man behind the TV persona. Since then I haven't met anyone in the science field that had one good thing to say about the guy, personally.

That's the funny thing about taking any kind of stance on anything. Everyone knows that I'm very green when it comes to environmental issues. However, I'm out with friends at a pub and I get a can of Coke... and since the pub doesn't have recycling bins, I toss it in the garbage rather than carry it around with me all night. Then the calls of "hypocrite" come flying in. As stated, I'm a vegetarian, but I do eat cheese from time to time... to which people all the time say "you know, there's the same environmental impact from dairy cows as there is from beef cows, you hypocrite". The message is perfectly clear: "Simply by following your own ethos you have insulted me by calling me immoral, therefore I will tear you down."

This guy is a absolute loon, he may make some good points about climate change and the environment but usually i miss them because i am still stunned by the absolutely ######ed statement he made 30 seconds before. Just like this.
Does anyone remember anything about what he was saying except for the fact he wants politicians jailed?
We should seriously petition to have his order of canada award revoked. The only reason he got it was for his work on CBC for all those years when he was a little more sane then now. I used to watch him and respect him, now he's just a train wreck,

What the hell? People crack on Rush Limbaugh all the time. I know I do. I'm going to crack on anyone who takes an extremist stance one way or another.

Wow. Just wow.
I mean, there it all is in a nutshell.
I can't think of anything else in the world that would have proven my point better than that, so I thank you.
Given that you have to feed livestock vast amounts of food, and if you remember the energy pyramid from junior high science class you would also remember that you need to feed the livestock far more plant materials than what energy you gain from the livestock. But that really wasn't what your post was about was it. It was about calling me a hypocrite. By following my own ethos, you took that as an insult to your own morality and your gut reaction was to tear me down. Which is exactly what right wingers do with all environmentalists... We say "conserve" and the right wingers say "well hold your breath so you don't use any oxygen".

Hey man - respect. I know the environmental costs of raising livestock.
I've just never heard of someone being a vegetarian for environmental reasons.
