I have a question, of the 99 cents you pay at itunes, what percentage of that actually goes to the artist?

They way I see it, paying for single songs is just a step above downloading the song for free. The artists still aren't getting their percentage of the $12-15 cd's that you are not buying. I fail to see how buying single tracks is good for an artist at all. It seems the winners here are itunes and puretracks.

That is true, but for me personally, I don't agree with it.

Then that would mean the CD is not worth $12-$15, they are willing to sell somewhere else cheaper. The good old Market Economy

What does it cost for these places to buy the license to be able to sell the songs?

I think they have to pay a royalty of anywhere between 30-50% to the song's copyright holder (i.e. the record label).
