Obama has got some powerful celebs on his side
http://www.theage.com.au/news/us-ele...090418847.html
Quote:
It's Obama for me, says Clooney
"I've been an Obama guy for a year-and-a-half, and I'm very excited by his campaign," Clooney told reporters in Beverly Hills.
"It just seems that the more time he's out there, his numbers keep growing. So I'm very, very encouraged."
Clooney, who has been nominated for a best actor Oscar for Michael Clayton, is one of a growing list of celebrities who have endorsed Obama
|
.
but then there is Michael Moore
Quote:
Meanwhile, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore said he had refrained from endorsing a candidate, even though he was an admirer of Hillary Clinton. "All I can say is that I like Senator Clinton very much," he said.
"There's a chapter I wrote in my first book titled My Forbidden Love for Hillary," Moore said, but noted that Senator Clinton's 2002 vote to authorise military force in Iraq was "morally indefensible".
|
and here is the complete list
Quote:
HILLARY CLINTON Barbra Streisand, Steven Spielberg, Jack Nicholson, Carly Simon, Janet Jackson , Hugh Hefner, Magic Johnson, Maya Angelou, Jerry Springer, and adult-movie queen Jenna Jameson.
BARACK OBAMA Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Will Smith, Halle Berry, Stevie Wonder, Robert De Niro, Forest Whittaker, Kathleen Turner, Toni Morrison, Gene Wilder, Ethel Kennedy and Maria Shriver.
JOHN McCAIN Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Selleck , Rip Torn, General Norman Schwarzkopf and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas.
MIKE HUCKABEE Chuck Norris, rocker Ted Nugent and pro wrestler Ric "The Nature Boy" Flair.
MITT ROMNEY Donny and Marie Osmond, Ann Coulter.

This may be a rather naive question, but will people actually vote for someone because a movie star said that's who they'll be voting for?

actually Obamas list is much larger than that...

OBAMAS CELEBRITY ARMY
Quote:
Oprah isn't the only one. Voters in many of the Super Tuesday states, particularly on college campuses, shouldn't be surprised to see celebrities such as Robert DeNiro, who appeared today with Obama at a New Jersey rally, Kerry Washington, Usher, Chris Rock, Brendan Routh, Kate Walsh, Kal Penn and Tate Donovan speaking on Obama's behalf. Voters in California are getting phone calls from Ed Norton and Alfre Woodard; caucus goers in Colorado might hear from Forest Whitaker. Enrique Marciano, who stars in CBS's Without a Trace, is campaigning for Obama with Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. Minnesotans might be shocked to see Scarlett Johansson knocking at their door.
Obama's surge of celebrity backing turns the tables on the Clintons, who have long enjoyed strong support from powerful Hollywood figures.
|
Quote:
Clinton isn't without her share of Hollywood fans who are working to augment her built-in name recognition ahead of Super Tuesday. Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Ron Howard, America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Fran Drescher, John Grisham, and Magic Johnson have all campaigned on her behalf, helping out with phone banks and making the occasional personal appearance. At a Clinton rally in LA on Saturday, such bold face names as Sally Field, Bradley Whitford, and Christine Lahti were in attendance
|
Quote:
The crowd, which included Victoria Hopper, wife of Dennis Hopper and head of Women for Obama in California, producer Paula Weinstein, actress Tracee Ellis Ross of the CW show "Girlfriends" (and daughter of Diana Ross), actress Journee Smollett of The Great Debaters and Vicki Kennedy — wife of Max Kennedy, one of Bobby Kennedy's sons — murmured their assent. All told, the women pledged to each bring 50 people to the polls with them and make a total of 2,000 calls before Super Tuesday.

Once it started to look like McCain had the nomination locked up, Ann Coulter endorsed Hillary Clinton. The die-hard Republicans really hate McCain that much!

Consciously, no. However, celebrities always get media exposure, and so a celebrity endorsement means a soundbite that's going to get picked up and widely distributed. Even if nobody votes for Obama based on the Clooney endorsement, it's a fifteen second soundbite that'll get on every TV in america, exposure that he otherwise wouldn't get.

I don't get it. He is pro-life, pro-gun and pro-war and yet the "real" conservatives don't think he is far enough to the right. Is it just because he didn't support Bush's tax cuts?

I don't know why people give such weight to the opinion of someone famous. Just because they can play a sport or act does not make them some sort of political savant. The only benefit they have is they may travel more and thereby not be trapped by provincial bias.
I'd prefer to see a list of economists, sociologists, etc (who are unaffiliated with any specific party) give their opinions on their areas of expertise for each party's platform.

Stephen Colbert -responding to a recent appearance at Northwestern University, where crowd members donned Colbert/Obama ’08 T-shirts. "I can't tell Jon I'm dropping him to go with Barack. Maybe he'll read it in this article." (source) Rap artist Common - on Jadakiss’ 2004 hit single “Why?”"Why is Bush acting like he trying to get Osama? Why don't we impeach him and elect Obama?" Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Basketball Legend
</STRONG>"I think Sen. Obama is a very good choice," Abdul-Jabbar said. "I was very impressed [with] his knowledge of the issues and the fact that throughout his lifetime he has been a consensus builder and someone who can build bridges to different segments of America society. I think that's something we need at this point." (source) Halle Berry, Tony Award Winning Actress
</STRONG>"I so love what he stands for and respect him so much that when I met him, I was a bit shaky," she told the Philadelphia Daily News, which asked if she'd endorse him for President. "Oh, my God, yes! I'll do whatever he says to do. I'll collect paper cups off the ground to make his pathway clear." (source) Dreamworks, Hollywood Studio
"Three of the most powerful men in Hollywood - Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen - have just invited Democrats to a truly high-profile fundraiser, a Feb. 20 reception for Obama at the swank Beverly Hilton Hotel, with a dinner later at Geffen's home for top donors." (source) Ariana Huffington, Editor-in-Chief, The Huffinton Post
</STRONG>"Sure, Obama is young, brilliant, handsome, charismatic ... and, yes, Sen. Biden, "clean as a whistle." But the reason why Hollywood has gone ga-ga for Obama can be summed up in one word: "Casting." […] And it's not just a question of finding someone with "star quality," a young, handsome leading man to head your ticket. It's about blending the right candidate with the right role at the right time for our country.
[…] For now at least, Hollywood has decided that Obama for President is a case of perfect casting." (source)
 Ari Emanuel, Hollywood Superagent
</STRONG>"Obama made another stop that evening, a private meet-and-greet in the home of Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel, who's a partner in the powerful Endeavor Agency and brother of Democratic Congressman Rahm Emanuel. A small clatch of celebrities and entertainment industry bigwigs — Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Normal Lear, Christine Lahti and her husband, Studio 60 producer Thomas Schlamme — came out to meet Obama.
Powerhouse agent Ari Emanuel, whose client stable includes A-listers like Michael Douglas, Martin Scorsese, Larry David and Paris Hilton, is set to throw a sure-to-be-star-studded bash for Obama, D-Ill., next month." (source)
Rev. Jesse Jackson, Civil Rights Activist and Two-Time Presidential Candidate
</STRONG>"All of my heart leans toward Barack," Jackson said. "He is a next-door neighbor literally. I think he's an extension of our struggle to make this a more perfect union."
"I will talk to all of them, but my inclinations are really toward Barack," he added." (source)
 Ben Affleck, Actor
</STRONG>"In his introduction, Affleck said that Obama, "in a short time, he has already proven himself to be the most galvanizing leader to come out of either party in my opinion in at least a decade and a half, if not more."
"He is very, very likely -- though good luck in getting him or anyone else to say so -- at one point, eventually down the road, at some point, in my opinion and many others, the future of this country," Affleck said." (source)
Wyclef Jean, Hip-Hop Artist and Roving Ambassador to Haiti
</STRONG>"Wyclef rapped “moved the crowd just like Obama” during a performance at the 2007 Grammy’s, an event watched by more than 20 million viewers." (source) Charles Barkley, Basketball Legend
</STRONG>"I'm going with Senator Barack Obama. I like him a lot. I respect him. I really -- I really think he'd make a fantastic president." (source)

George Clooney
"He possesses the one quality that you cannot teach and you can't learn. … He is a leader. He walks into a room and you want to follow him somewhere, anywhere. And … I've only seen that a couple of times in my life." (source)
 Oprah Winfrey
“I think his sense of hope and optimism for this country and what is possible for the United States is the kind of thing that I would like to get behind."
(source) Edward Norton
"It would be a privilege to support a guy like that," the actor said. "In my adult life there have been so few people in the political spectrum that I have really gotten excited about. I think he's got the goods." (source) Will Smith
Clearly meaning that "third act" would be a run for the White House, Smith added, "There's absolutely going to be a third act and I believe [Obama] is going to be the hero." Not a bad endorsement from a guy who has made quite a career of playing heroes of all kinds the past few years. (source) Rob Reiner
"How poetic would it be that a one-term congressman from the state of Illinois could be elected President and free the slaves and now a one-term African-America Senator from that same state could become the next President?" (source) Laurence Fishburne
"Clearly, Barack Obama is someone who is optimistic and positive in terms of what he feels is possible for this country," said [Laurence] Fishburne, who plays a chef in the Ambassador kitchen. "That is very refreshing and very much needed today." Warren Buffet
"I've got a conviction about him that I don't get very often. He has as much potential as anyone I've seen to have an important impact over his lifetime on the course that America takes. If he can do an ounce better with me, fine." (source) Ethel Kennedy - widow of Senator Bobby Kennedy
"I think he feels it. He feels it just like Bobby did," Ethel Kennedy said, comparing her late husband's quest for social justice to Obama's. "He has the passion in his heart. He's not selling you. It's just him." Ethel Kennedy invited Obama to deliver the keynote address at a ceremony commemorating the 80th birthday of Robert F. Kennedy. She said she had carefully followed the career of the Illinois senator, whom she referred to as "our next president." (source) Kristen Chenoweth, Tony Award Winning Actress
If she’s surprisingly salty, it’s in part because she’s tired of trying to calibrate or camouflage her opinions. (She was wearing a Barack Obama for President button, and said she prays for him.) (source) Steven D. Levitt, co-author of Freakonomics“If he has the same effect on others as he does on me, you are looking at a future president." (source) Matt Damon
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Who would you most like to see as the next president?
MATT DAMON: Barack Obama.
MATTHEWS: Would you campaign for Obama? Would you go out and work for him?
DAMON: Yes, I would support him strongly (source) Rap Artist Nas
Q: Do you vote?
A: Not until Obama runs…or maybe when Ms Clinton runs. Obama is an exciting cat. (source) Emilio Estevez
The question that needs to be asked, then is whether we'll ever see another politician in the tradition of the brothers Kennedy. "We need to do something to inspire the young people to re-engage, and I think it's going to take somebody who is charismatic, who speaks from his heart and who is not afraid to, you know, flub," Estevez said. "There's nobody out there yet. [Senator] Barack Obama, I think, has a ton of potential. (source) Sharon Stone
"Bobby Kennedy went to South Africa during his senatorial campaign — I mean, think of that! That's pretty cool," marveled [Sharon] Stone, a jaded hairdresser in the film. "Obama just went to Africa too. ... He is certainly a very charismatic man who knows how to speak to the nation as a whole and not in a bipartisan, singular way. ... He understands that we are a multicultural, multiparty nation. He tries to think of us as a united states." (source

Alec Baldwin: By following the rules of the Film Actor's Guild, the world can become a better place; that handles dangerous people with talk, and reasoning; that, is the fag way. One day you'll all look at the world us actors created and say, "wow, good going, fag. You really made the world a better place, didntcha, fag?"
Peter Jennings: Team America has once again pissed off the entire world after blowing up half of Cairo. Tim Robbins: Let me explain to you how this works. You see, the corporations finance Team America. And then Team America goes out and the corporations sit there in their, ih in their corporation buildings and, and and see that's, they're all corporationy, and they make money. Mhm. Sean Penn: Last year, I went to Iraq. Before Team America showed up, it was a happy place. I tend to get concerned when too many celebrities start flocking towards one candidate. Celebrities tend to be very out of touch with the common citizen, their needs and wants. Have to echo Matt Stone and Trey Parker... their "F.A.G." spoof is not that far off the money.
There's a significant theory that the celebrities supporting Kerry was part of why he lost... Bush was able to parlay that into Kerry looking out of touch and Bush being "the people's candidate"
