7X7 = 49 big cats X 7 = 343 little cats
(49+ 343) X 4 = 1568 cat legs
14 + 1568 = 1582 legs total.
My math may be rushed, as I am in lecture right now.
I am probably missing something because this seems like it shouldnt be hard at all.

I got this too.
Edit** I did it completely differently
7 girls = 14 legs
49 big cats = 196 legs
343 little cats = 1372 legs
Total legs = 1582

The brain teaser made me think of this brain teaser.
Locke the homeless Hobo had a cigarette addiction. Locke had no money so in order to feed this addiction he had to collect cigarette butts and every seven he collected he could make a new cigarette.
After collecting 49 Cigarette butts, how many Cigarettes can Locke make?
|
8
Edit: figured I'd add a little bit of an explination.
He's got 49 cigarette butts, so he can make 7 smokes out of that.
When those 7 smokes are done, he'll have 7 buts left from those smokes, so he can use those to make one more, for a total of 8.

You forgot that each girl has 7 backpacks, that all contain cats.
There are 343 big cats and 2401 little cats
7*2=14
343*4=1372
2401*4=9604
9604 + 1372 + 14 = 10990
Just like a lot of folks have already said.

There are 7 girls on a bus.
Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In each back pack there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat there are 7 little cats.
There are 49 backpacks. (7 girls with 7 backpacks each... 7*7=49)
Therefore there are 49 big cats and 343 small cats
7 girls = 14 legs
49 big cats = 196 legs
343 small cats = 1372 legs
14+196+1372=1582
edit... I'm wrong. There are 343 big and 2401 small... oopsie...
Real answer is: 10990

When I was first asked that riddle I was in grade 9 and it was by our math teacher. Me thinks the real riddle involves roaches

What is truly alarming here is that Southland transportation has a seven year old driving the bus, because clearly there is no bus driver. I am certain there are some labour laws being broken here...

Yeah, that's the answer. Took me another 15 mintues before i got it.
They each have 7 backpacks with 7 adult cats and 7 kittens per adult cat in each backpack =8 cats (1 adult cat + 7 kittens)X4 legs=32 Legs x 7 backpacks=224 legs (per backpack) X 7 bags per Girl=1568 legs per girl x 7girls =10,976 + (7girlsX2 legs=14 legs) = 10.990
I forgot to add the girls legs

I have a fun one.
3 guy walk into a hotel and request a room. (Don't ask why 3 guys are getting a room) The bell boy at the service desk says its $30, so each guy pays $10. As the bell boy at the service desk is putting away the 3 $10 bills, the hotel manager returns, see's this and says "The room is not $30, its $25, on sale this week. Go return $5."
As the bell boy is going up the elevator, he's wondering how he is going to split $5 between 3 boys - so he reasons "since I'm such a good guy, I'll give each guy $1 (3 x $1 = $3) and I'll keep $2 myself.
Now, each guy renting the room has paid $9, and the bell boy keeps $2:
$2 + (3 x $9) = $29
Where did the missing $1 go?

ok my math is most likley off, but if he has to give back 5 dollars. then wouldn't he be giving back dollar 30, 29, 28, 27, 26, thus putting the original 25 back in the cash register?

Its still in the cash register.
Each guy paid $9, for a total of $27, while the bellboy stole $2. $25 left for the hotel.

It didn't go anywhere, the $27 that they paid, + what the bellboy keeps shoudn't add up $30.
Men paid $9 each, wich is $27.
$25 to the room and $2 to the bell boy.
So 25 + 2 = 27
The "Missing dollar" doesn't come from faulty math, rather from faulty logic.

Before:
$0 in cash register
$0 in bellboy's pocket
$10 in each man's pocket (x3)
$30 total
After:
$25 in cash register
$2 in bellboy's pocket
$1 in each man's pocket (x3)
$30 total
