You get 1 point for every dime you put on the card (ergo 10 points per dollar). Every 20,000 points is $20 you can use in the grocery store. So every $2,000 you get $20 back.
You also can collect bonus points, such as if you have a bank account with PC they give you 10,000 points for your first direct deposit pay into the account. You get bonus points for buying PC products as well.
Another nifty little feature is you can transfer PetroPoints from PetroCanada over to PC Points at a ratio of 1:1 (at least last I recall). Which means if you're buying gas on your MasterCard your doubling your points.
But I'm sure there are other cards out there, wait to see what others say before determining that I am telling you about the best deal

Make sure you bring reusable bags because you get 50 points per bag, and make sure you tell them before you complete your transactions (you don't get points for how many bags you use, you get points for the amount of reusable bags you bring within reasonable limits).
Oh as far as getting a credit cards goes, if you are going to carry a balance then make sure you have 2 credit cards (don't fill up both), then just do balance transfers for lower interest rates (it's usually around 4%). I'm in a ton of debt ($5000 a lot of that is for school) but the positive in that is the low interest I have on that balance (4%). As for the person who said they couldn't understand people who think it's okay to have debt, in my case it's not okay and it's also something I couldn't avoid. I had a choice between going to school having some debt and then eventually paying it off as I'm in school, or staying out of school and not having debt and attempting to save money so I could eventually go to school. I'm willing to pay the interest and be in debt for a few years instead of putting off school.
