So your basically saying that football is watched more by people because of the BCS vs. March Madness? It also might be that the regular season is 3 times longer so the games are more meaningful. Would your proposal be that bball shorten it's season to 12 games and put a BCS style system in? Should the NHL do the same to it's season since the NFL is way more popular?

No, what I'm saying is that NCAA FB is watched more than NCAA BB ... by miles. That is undisputable. The start of the thead points out how much interest there is in college bb by having the square root of zero posts on here (not unlike many places I read posts) Yet people hold march madness up like a standard football should aspire to. My point is that it takes a few months of mediocre games that clearly have much less interest associated with them just to get there.

Everyone I suppose would have their own opinion about why that is, but to me football can attribute its popularity to a few things, with the number one reason is because of how important the games are. And a playoff erodes how important the games are.

Your post also highlights why a playoff is bad for NCAA football. There are only 12 games, it's a short season and the current structure allows for the lack of games to be made up by the sheer importance of them.

The one thing that College BB and March Madness has over College football is that March Madness attracts a ton of casual fans. College football may have more fans overall but come bowl time there is not nearly the interest in the casual fan that March Madness creates. I am not sure whether a play-off would do more to attract fans, but having a clear winner at the end of the season sure would be more interesting to people than the clusterf@$% they have now.

Also the "games are more important without a play-off" argument is crap. I don't want to get into too much because we have argued it before and this is a College BB thread, but it didn't appear as though the OSU-Illinois game ended up being important. The two LSU losses weren't important. All the wins that Hawaii, Kansas, USC and Georgia had weren't important. The games would still be as important if not more under a play-off.

well, you are using a very unique year where everyone seemed to lose at the perfect time to create a quagmire. You know that.

2 years ago when Michigan played OSU, and were 1 vs 2, in a playoff format that game would have been absolutely useless. Same with the Kansas vs Mizzou game this year, at the time was critical, but in a playoff format would have been irrelevant.

I try too, but its tough being out west here, ACC football is not shown much.

ACC basketball has a few games a week on channel 59 for Shaw. So I catch som Clemson games then.

I feel that this years b-ball club has the talent to finish in the top 5 in the ACC which should be good enough to get them to the dance.

Big 12 is very tough this year.

KU, K-State, Texas, A&M, Baylor, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech all have a shot at the tournament.

Beasley and Walker are unbelievable players. I doubt they stay in Manhattan past this season. Beasley will be the first pick in the draft.

UT beats another Top 10 team in Kansas last night. The thing that makes me mad is that after every game that UT beats a top 10 team the articles on ESPN say that the other team is the better team UT just outplayed them. No other team in College Basketball has beaten 3 top 10 teams. UT has proven they can beat any one on any given night, unfortunately they have also proven that they can lose to anyone on any given night as well.

that, and the fact that they will have an extra 3 weeks to prepare for the season should help.

Just constant with you. Yes, ASU has two victories over Arizona. ASU has the same shot to make the tournament as Arizona.

If you make the tournament, congrats. If Arizona doesnt, well, I guess 1 year off every 25 isnt too shabby.

What years did you go to ASU?

Oh settle, I was just having fun with UA not getting in. I got accepted in 1999 into grad school, but got a job in O&G instead.

UA has one of the best basketball programs and maybe the best in the west in the last 20 years. Just having fun with the fact that they are having a poor year.

I promise not to make fun of ASU beating UA again during the football and basketball season. That makes three less posts to make annually

Realistically, both ASU and Arizona could make it in. Arizona has been struggling over the past 10-12 games but they still have 18 wins and the hardest schedule in the country (RPI - #1). ASU has a softer schedule (RPI - #74) but are still in good position.

I think if Arizona can win a couple games in the Pac-10 tourney (first round against OSU) they'll make it in. ASU needs to beat USC in the first round which is a big challenge.

But, cheers to the Pac-10 this year. A very realistic chance to have 7 teams go to the tournament (UCLA, USC, Stanford, Arizona, ASU, Washington St. and Oregon).

I didn't realize thier RPI was #1. good for them for scheduling those teams in the first place.

ya, the pac10 seemed better, and I know everyone says that, but everyone seems to think their conference is better. My guess is 4 teams go. Of your list, ASU, UA and Oregon don't make it. But we'll have to see how the conf. championship turns out.

San Diego beating the Zags definately put a damper on the bubble teams. One of those bubble teams now will not get in.
