I'm still not sold. It is almost February and there have been ~10 days where winter tires would have been a significant help. by the end of winter that number may double. It is just as easy to slowww down and drive carefully.

yep. But I was told driving carefully made little or no difference and I was just slowing people down with my all season tires. So we must be wrong, 4X4.

I have never had winter tires on my car, but on the little 4x4 suv we have, it does make a huge difference in the snow.

when i was living out in the sticks where they don't clear the roads too often, winter tires were very effective.

I laugh at all the people who have winter tires on for 8+ months of the year.
Windows down, sunroof open, tunes blazing and they still have winter tires on.

*whoosh* this thread went over a lot of people's heads.
After getting the "Hey... you're the winter tire guy? I thought you'd be some grumpy old man!" at the Heckle, after a few beers last night I thought I'd throw this thread out as a peace offering to the all season tire crowd.

I don't even think there's been 10 days. I'd say the average number of days per winter that winter tires might help around here would be about 5 (for most drivers - obviously the number would be more if you were driving rural snowy roads or something like that). Even then, you still have take care and drive slow - even with winter tires on.
Driving for the conditions is FAR more important then the difference between all seasons and winter tires. I've never had winter tires on my car, and I've never had a problem.
Sure, if you've got a little more money to spend, having a set of summer tires and a set of winter tires might be slighty better, but its in no way a neccessity (in Calgary at least) for most people.

I laughed when I saw this. This is a Toad & Turtle inside joke folks. Please relax and stay calm.

Nokain WR's are all weather tires. They are rated for winter and you can drive them all year long.

I drive alot, usually 1000+ kms a week and I can tell you for highway driving there has been maybe 5-8 times during the last 3 years of driving to work that I could say winter tires would of been of use. 98% of my winter driving is dry highway. Winter tires are over rated.
Im sure if I had an extra 600 bucks sitting around they wouldn't hurt but I don't so oh well.

Yup. And I'll be out enjoying my nice pliable winter tires whilst most are cursing their all seasons that are frozen with a nice flat spot on the bottom.

actually Nokian All-Weather tires are just that, they're built with snow traction but you can use them all year round. they work just as good as the Blizzacks i had on my old car
