What? Those shows were paragons of Starfleet virtue in comparison to Deep Space Nine!!!

While I am disappointed that the movie has been pushed back, I think it will overall amount to a better film as they will have an additional 5 months to polish up the script, marketing, and effects. Also, in order for the franchise to be successfully relaunched, this film must be a success... so they have to try and set it up to be successful as best they can.

I should emphasize that:
"Successful" and "Good" are two totally different things when it comes to movies.

As soon as I heard that this movie had a time traveling villain I kinda consigned it to the wait for it to show up on MovieCentral mindset. Time Travel plots is Star Trek's deux ex machina to make up for lazy script writing.
Everyone is oohhing and ahhhing over the trailer and the website because its shiny, but remember that Nemisis was a ball of crap wrapped in special effects tin foil and dune buggy's

I'm pretty sure that any speculation on the plot itself is just that... speculation. The Star Trek rumour mill is one of the best.
I'm pretty sure that all we know of the plot is that it takes place during the time of the TOS crew with the NCC-1701. Other than that, it is all speculation.
I would also like to point out that in the best TNG movie, First Contact, it was all about time travel.
Not to mention that one of the best episodes, I feel, in all of Star Trek was "Year of Hell" from ST: Voyager and it also had a time travel story. (Before I get called out on this, I felt that Voyager was overall a weaker series and is behind DS9 and TNG in my list.)

Really? I've never met a Star Trek fan that didn't love DS9. It was my favourite series... closely followed by TNG.

I am about 95% sure I will love the movie. I think Abrams is a genius, so I guess I have a running start. I was really pumped to hear he was doing this movie.
So now I am just concerned with whether it makes enough money to cover its $150 million budget.

I'm wondering how they can keep rehashing this theme over and over again.

Considering there have been a lot Strek Trek movies produced i wouldn't bet on it covering it's budget. Sequels tend not to do very good at the box office.

I didn't like it either. The characters sucked for most of the first few seasons, then the writers decided that by putting in a massive war, they could make it an "action" show.
I mean, the Federation manages to rally 40 ships against the Borg, and a few years down the road, they have like 1500 for the war against the Dominion?
It was a show about exploration. Not Space Above and Beyond.
What gives?

I like TV shows that follow rules of convention. Which is perhaps why I didn't like DS9 compared to TNG.

What seems to be gleaned from TNG/DS9 is that Starfleet was getting very spread out and antiquated (and very soft and pacifistic after the Kirk era) when the Borg invaded. In TOS, it was inferred that even though we only saw Constitution class ships, and that there were only a dozen or so, that was a small percentage of the force that Starfleet could exert... seeing as the Klingons and Romulans were allied, and a significant threat. It was also intimated that the Constitution-class starship was the toughest ship around compared to the galactic powers, while in TNG, the Galaxy was considered weak compared to the Warbirds and Klingon Attack Cruisers.
They were caught with their pants down and were only able to recall 40 old (and outdated) ships in time, which in turn got completely worked by the Borg. After the asskicking, they rebuilt the Fleet and then some, with a special attention to not looking like idiots again (Sisko - Defiant project). They also pulled back from exploration a lot when the Klingons, and then Dominion started getting serious.
Yeah, I'm a geek. But I really only like TOS, DS9 and a handful of TNG and ENT.
PS: While having Star Trek come out on Dec 25 was dumb to begin with, moving it to May in Blockbuster season also, superficially, seems like a bad idea. The hype will not last for a year and a half with anyone but Trek fans, and Trek fanatics. Then it has to compete with some pretty big competition.

Too many weak Captains like Picard and Janeway that were all about Diplomacy through talking.
Not enough Captains who believed in Democracy through the maximum application of firepower and the ability to bluff about self destruct devices.

Don't forget making up stuff that doesn't exist, coercing women through sexual means and outwitting computers with logic (and total illogic as needed).

Any Captain who can make a bazooka out of rocks on the fly, let alone manages to find a cardboard tube on a planet with no tree's defines outright awesomeness to me.
