Both.
Both bands pushed each other to the limit and influenced future music more then just about any other example out there.
That said, I listen to the Rolling Stones more The Stones stayed closer to their blues heritage while the Beatles went all weird and folky. Blues is better music to listen to then folk. For me at least.
Also, as pure musicians I don't think any of the Beatles really match the Stones. But as far as song writers go, I think we all know who won that battle!

I'd say the the Beach Boys and the Beatles pushed eachother.
But I listen to a song like Tomorrow Never Knows and find that it's the type of song that literally created genre's of music and changed the way that some music is made. (Tape loops)
That's why I pick the Beatles

How much of the Beatles legacy is attributable to George Martin? Would they have been as experimental without him? They were a cover band, writing "silly love songs" before they evolved with his production.

Can't it be both?
Rolling Stone: Sympathy For The Devil
Beatles: Never really gave it much thought as to my "favourite"s might be Come Together

Yeah, but everyone was writing silly love songs at the time. The Beatles were a pop band who started exploring new sounds...and yes, George Martin deserves a lot of credit for that. Also, drugs deserve some credit for that.

Both for sure, but more than either I'm a John Lennon fan so that gives the Beatles the edge over the Stones with me.

I am not a fan of either but the Rolling Stones have some songs that aren't bad.
I can't stand the Beatles, and especially can stand Lennon.
So I guess it is the Stones by default more than anything.

I simply cannot answer that. You see my username and that's partly because I really like the Stones.
I grew up near Liverpool though so it's built in that I like 'The Beatles'! I've met Paul Mc, he's my friend's cousin, plus I just really like their music.
Paint it Black and A Day in the Life are my favourite songs by them both.

Is it weird that after I read you grew up in Liverpool, I gave your post an accent in my head as I was reading?
I would have to say the Beatles.

HA. That's funny. You probably gave it the wrong one though. I don't have a scouse accent. I grew up on the 'posh' side of the water in Wallasey.
Also since I've lived in Canada since 1990 my accent has changed somewhat. I guess you can call it 'mid-Atlantic' People back in England say I have a Canadian accent while people here still hear my English accent. I can't win!!!
