The freaks are real, out of every 100,000 persons that show up for AI auditions, I'd say that 1/3 probably qualify for whackos, they just come out of the woodwork for something like this.

The producers then purposely go out and in the first screening process they lie to the freaks to make them feel like they actually have talent and a chance and send them through to Paula, Simon, and Randy deluded into thinking that they're on top of the world. Then the film crew goes into the waiting area and further encourages the freaks by pumping up their confidence and lifting them to higher heights while they are waiting and generally patronizing them so that the miserable car wreck of their fall is even bigger for the TV audience to laugh at.

The dude with the stalker song for Paula on Tuesday night was awesome.....sooooo creepy

Those were the two best lines of the song.
