My wife and I are changing from YMCA to world health or good life, but I really have no desire to sit through some sales talk from either side when I just want the prices- I know what each gym offers and I just want the prices.
Anyone know what the current monthly fees generally are at these two? Im guessing things might have changed since this thread was created. Apparently world health is offering student rates for all new members right now, so someone letting me know what those are would be appreciated. Im sure they will each ask for $99 commission, I mean enrollment fee, but thats fine.

I pay $21.50 every two weeks at Good Life. I had to pay a $100 enrolment fee upfront and signed a 1 year contract about 4 years ago so I can get my membership for less.

I pay $66 per month at Talisman Centre, what's nice about them it's a month to month membership and you cancel at anytime, there are also no enrollment fees.

I just tried to request prices from world health a few days ago. I told them in my message that I just wanted the prices and that I would prefer to be contacted by email (I gave them a wrong phone number).
Sure enough a few days later I get an email from one of the Managers saying he had tried calling a few times but my phone was off. HA! He also wanted me to come down and set up a meeting to talk and check out the facilities. I said I couldnt make the times he had offered and requested the prices again. So he replies with more times that he is available.
Looks like I will be signing up at Talisman, they atleast post the prices on the website. Silly World Health.

Ya, I have no problem with sales people in general, but a gym is a gym as far as I am concerned and I just want the closest and the cheapest. Don't need a sales talk on getting a personal trainer etc...
Talisman is a great gym, but too far for me, which is why we are leaving the Y.
Sounds like Good Life will be $100 a month for the 2 of us. Still not sure about World Health yet. Wonder if this "student rate promotion" will amount to anything.

Only reason I see worth paying 56 bucks a month with Good Life is that they are open 24 hrs on the weekdays... seeing that I work 70+ hours a week... makes it easy to slip in workouts at 3 AM.

Gyms are the biggest con artists. Want to have some fun with them? Tell them you're paying your membership with cash. They'll refuse it. They want a direct deposit or credit card so they can auto renew you.

How does refusing cash make them a con artist? Doesn't it just make it easier on them to not have to take your 55 dollars cash every month and instead just direct deposit the money?
What do you mean by auto renew? You get a membership and once you're over your initial year or whatever it is you can quit at any time. What are they auto renewing - one month??

Has anyone tried the Fit 4 Less by Goodlife on McLeod Trail?
I'm thinking of switching from Canyon Meadows GoodLife. I only really want access to cardio machines for winter.

But you can't quit whenever you want, you must give advance notice. And if you give them a credit card they tend to have a habit of continuing to charge even after you have quit.
I had to call call Golds billing centre a number of times to get the bloodsuckers to stop charging.
My experience was Golds was that they are evil.

I've generally found all the chains evil. Really, you had to switch from monthly rates to every two weeks so it seems cheaper. WHC at the nicer clubs (Bay, Edgemont) is $36 bi-weekly which works out to $936 per year. Plus they always try to charge you the equipment fee and the intiation fee and and and...
Also hate the refusal to talk over phone.

Don't pay any initiation fee.
They can always waive it. Its just like the $35 phone fees the cell companies charge. Walk away from the sale and they will waive it.
Never pay an initiation fee, setup fee etc regardless of product. They are pure cash grabs that most people don't blink at paying. A company isn't going to walk away from a year long gym membership that probably doesn't get used very often over an $100.

If you're thinking of joining a gym right now, wait a month.

I didn't mention the above as I assume it's common knowledge. But I guess it probably isn't and needs repeated.
Yeah, terrible terrible terrible time to join a gym.

Hmm sounds like there's a market for a website that list gym member cost in real numbers. Kinda like gasbuddy, but for gyms/fitness centres. I'm sure you'd be facing a lawsuit in week number of 1 of running such a thing, but you'd probably get great traffic.

I would never ever go back to Gold's gym, it nearly got to the point where I was getting a lawyer involved to get away from them.
Plus it wasn't a fun place to work out at. Too packed and you had to basically wait in line to do anything.

That looks like an amazing deal. I would much rather drive for 10 minutes and pay $20/month rather than driving 2 minutes and paying $60/month at whc.
I might have to go check that out.
The u of c's gym is a little dated, and the change rooms needs a serious face lift. However, there are plenty of cardio machines, lots of free weights, racks, and machines, plus the track, so it's still pretty good.

We used to do Trico membership for the family.
I think it was $75 for all of us for a month. I only ever did the spin classes and the deep water workout following my car accident. The kid's gymnastics cheaper were cheaper when we were members, but I can't remember how much.
We cancelled because the times for the classes clashed with other stuff in our life.
