But there's no way this is more annoying than a merge lane stopper. Or a left lane cell-phoner. Or people who bolt out of side streets only to go reallllly slow until they find the street they were looking for.
Well, I suppose to an emergency response person it may be more annoying.

Just put a set of fake lights on the top of your car and give'r.
Amazing how people get out of the way.
Rush hour? Nah, you can be home in 10 min from anywhere in Calgary.

Slowing down to 60 on the QE2 is just dumb under any circumstances. Me and my gf almost were in a collision becuase of that law that about half the drivers seem to be aware about. A big white F350 truck clipped a little cobalt turning into our lane in front of us, throwing that car spinning backwards into the median almost into the other lanes of traffic. All because a one of those highway sheriffs just pulled someone over.

I agree with J of M educating us to follow the rules but something I could never understand in Calgary was the Police insistence on the offending car stopping immediately, often blocking traffic and becoming a hazard. Most other places let the car being pulled over find a safe place to stop.

That means ppl can't read...there are signs saying "slow to 60 KM/H when passing emergency vehicles"

I agree. If you pull your car over on Deerfoot or Crowchild, especially the places where there is barely any shoulder, the cop should yell at you to exit and find somewhere safe to pull over. It's the cop that is in huge danger as soon as they step out of their car.

Actually, the police (RCMP) wait until they see a good safe spot, than alert the offending driver to pull over. The crest of a hill, a blind corner or a road with no shoulder is not really a good place to be pulling someone over. They have you in front of them, they can wait 23.2 seconds for you to be in a safer location. Believe me, I know

Yeah, most of us drivers who have gotten a few demerit points over the years know that, but that doesn't happen in Calgary.

I would venture to guess that police can't really control where someone pulls over. Sure they can throw on the lights when they think its appropriate in hopes that the person would clue in as to where the 'safest' spot is to pull over- where common sense would dictate. The problem with common sense is, well, you know the rest. If only people could keep their wits about them when they see the lights. Unfortunately, I would suggest a large majority become deer caught in headlights (blue and red lights to be specific).

Then get out of the way. You could kill someone. For safety reasons? I guarantee you are more likely to get rear end by slowing down than you would if you hadn't.

Thats why they started parking behind you and a bit to the left. This procedure takes up some lane space, but gives the officer some room to walk up to the vehicle. There have been cases, especially on 2 lane roads, where the police have been creamed standing at the guys window while a logging truck made a painting on the road with the officer. Don't ask why the truck driver didn't see the xmas tree parked at the side of the road, everyone has a theory.

++ That is news to me as well. I guess there arent many +2 lane roads in Alberta but good to know on the Deerfoot.

Thats why more police departments need to use regular vehicles driving the roads with video camera's and have marked police cars every so often stationed on the side of the road so that the officers in the regular cars can call ahead and say" bravo 5 we have some moron passing on the shoulder". It would be all on camera. No fighting that.

This is exactly right. How many times do you see idiot people pull over on the left hand side of QEII? I have seen it atleast a dozen times.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what the RCMP did on the QEII over a long weekend in the summer... cops in regular cars/vans/trucks in regular clothes. When someone goes whizzing by or does something stupid, they just radioed ahead to marked cars who pulled them over.
