I will have to check this place out, I am always in the hunt for S&P Squid.
Does it really compare to Ho Won?
I haven't come across any other restaurant (yet) that can even come close to the taste and portion size of Ho Wons S&P Squid...
Best in the city (IMO).

Seconded. The place might look like Orkin needs to conduct semi weekly roach sweeps, the staff may be surly, and some items on the 200 item menu are barf, but damn - the S&P Squid? Untouchable. Something about the salt/chili/pepper ratio that is magnificent. And the quantity? About 4x the size of an Earls Calamari. And cheap too.

One thing I can't seem to find is the fried tomato and scrambled egg combo, or at least a recipe to make it. It's by far my favorite Chinese dish, Western or authentic. I highly suggest people try it if they can ever find it.

Haha, my mom used to make that like every night when I was growing up whenever she was lazy. I am so utterly sick of eggs and tomatoes I have to eat them separately now or maybe as part of a real English Breakfast. I think that kind of food can be found more at the Hong Kong cafe/cuisine type restaurants (where they have great western food like spagetti under baked cheese, delicious Borsch, etc. in addition to asian food) like You & Me, Calgary Court, or Sun Chiu Kee's, etc.
I must mention though that Salt & Pepper squid and Ginger Beef, though western created Chinese foods (Ginger Beef was invented right here in Calgary), are some of my favorite foods in the world.

OT but I remember me and my wife were in Victoria and went to China town to look for a place to eat. As we were looking around at the menu boards we came to one restaurant that had a picture of the owner with Ralph Klein. Since it was alberta endorsed we gave it a try. Just thought it funny seeing that out on the island.

Do you remember how to make it? I tried, and my version looked like boiled vomit.

Now, I'm not saying that ALL non-Chinese people will order those, for anyone with fairly good knowledge of Chinese Cuisine would most likely order something other than the things mentioned.

I'm outraged that you would stereotype me like that, yet impressed you nailed my order
I remember going to the Pearl when I was a little kid. We lived north of the city and my dad would drive us in for flames games and we'd hit the pearl for a pregame meal. I had no idea it was even still around! I'll have to visit sometime soon.

It's funny cause I live two dorrs down from Dragon Pearl and have lived there for 3 years and I've only ever eaten there once... Granted it was good, but Inglewood Pizza is just too irresistable. I rarely get cravings for Chinese.

you ghost people need to eat the best thing Dragon Pearl offers. Only served on Saturday and Sunday lunch though. Beef tendon noodle soup. Better than what they serve in HK.

Haha, just reading this thread making my mouth water. (Ghost people?) Anyways, there are a couple different ways to make this tomato-egg lazy-dinner. I would recommend to scramble eggs first, then set aside. then fry your tomatoes with a little salt and add some water and mix some liquified starch in to thicken the sauce (salt/pepper/ketchup to taste) and then mix the eggs back in. Its really trial and error thing... (onions are good in it too green or white). And I agree about Dragon Pearl - the Beef tendon noodle is good, if the tendon is "lum"

My parents made it all the time too. When i moved out i could never get it to taste the same. So finally after 8 years i asked them. They put a bit of cane sugar into it so its not as sour.
They shouldn't have told me because I thought they were the best tomato pickers in the world. hehe

I was really interested in trying this place out because I too live in the deep south and can't find a decent chinese food place to eat at. So we went there last night and it was absolutely terrible. We ordered some spring rolls (only good part of the meal), dumplings (first she brought out an order that was burnt, every one of them, and then acted shocked that we sent them back), a beef in black bean sauce hot plate (beef was very rubbery) and chicken/cashews in yellow bean sauce (the sauce was thick
like molases and tasted absolutely terrible). The restaurant itself was dirty and at dinner time there was one other table of people in the place (granted it was sunday but it was empty through-out the whole meal).
I would recommend that you avoid this place at all costs and comparing it to Dragon Pearl is a joke. The only similarity between this place and Dragon Pearl is that your meal comes with complimentary water, only at Jubilee restaurant the water is cloudy and comes in a dirty cup.

People in the NW need to try Snow Palace in Crowfoot Crossing (it's by the Ricky's). My wife is Cantonese, and we go there about once a week. The food's great and you get a lot for your $$$. For a white guy like me their lunch special for $7.50 is a massive 3 item plate of tastiness. And if you like tripe, shark's fin soup, and other traditional Chinese food they've got lots of that too. Usually I'm the only white guy in the place.

I second this, the owner is very nice and their new shanghai-style lunch menu is pretty darn good, even though they claimed it as taiwanese haha.
For dinner Hawkwood Palace is a decent joint in the NW for those craving Westernized Chinese. For those living in the "Hills" try the recently opened "T.Pot" by the Harvest Hills T&T - Same genre & owned by the same guy as Forbidden City in the NE, better food & decor than the original.
