thanks bobblehead, that was a good read. Interesting to see actual numbers related to quality with the cables. It would appear as though my 5$ cable will display 1080p just as a 100$ monster would. Looks like problems appear once we hit 1440p . . . I'm all for future proofing but frankly I think the 95$ difference is absolutely crazy. I might have to join Photon's "handing monoprice.com cards out at futureshop" movement.

I know this thread is old, but I just wanted to echo what an awesome deal monoprice is for HDMI cables and the remote controlled switch boxes. I was looking at future shop and the 3x1 switch would have cost me $85... through monoprice I got a 4x1 switch and three HDMI cables for the same price with shipping. Completely insane, thanks for saving me a few hundred bucks!!

The only problem with cheap HDMI is that the connectors are not as well made. I had a Dynex, and the HDMI didn't snugly fit with my receiver, so had to get the $70 version.
Waste of cash, but worth it so I don't have to get up every 5 minutes and readjust the cable.

Not sure if this should get a new thread, but it is related to Monster Cable and a little dust-up with Blue Jeans Cable.
http://www.audioholics.com/news/indu...s-strikes-back
A quick summary - Monster Cable is not only known for their outrageously priced cable (good cable, I'll grant, but overpriced by about 3 or 4 times what they should be priced) but they are also famous for being extremely litigious. They are more than willing to sue any company that tries to use the word "Monster" in any way.
Monster cable sent a patent complaint to Blue Jeans Cable about a type of connector being used. Interestingly, the head of Blue Jeans Cable was, in his previous job, a litigation lawyer. In his own words:
Quote:
In plaintiffs' practice, likewise, I was always a strong advocate of standing upon principle and taking cases all the way to judgment, even when substantial offers of settlement were on the table. I am "uncompromising" in the most literal sense of the word. If Monster Cable proceeds with litigation against me I will pursue the same merits-driven approach; I do not compromise with bullies and I would rather spend fifty thousand dollars on defense than give you a dollar of unmerited settlement funds.
|
This could get interesting.

I just picked up a Shaw HDPVR on Wednesday and the guy tried to sell me some Monster HDMI cables. I'd heard from CP about what a rip off Monster princing is so I passed.
Are HDMI cables really necessary? What kind of difference do they make over component cables?

Good for you for passing on the cables. My advice would be to spend 5-10$ over at monoprice and pick up an hdmi cable and see the difference for yourself. You may find the quality difference large enough that it matters to you, or you may not. A write-up I found when googling:
Quote:
So, which is better, DVI or component? HDMI or component? The answer--unsatisfying, perhaps, but true--is that it depends. It depends upon your source and display devices, and there's no good way, in principle, to say in advance whether the digital or the analog connection will render a better picture. You may even find, say, that your DVD player looks better through its DVI or HDMI output, while your satellite or cable box looks better through its component output, on the same display. In this case, there's no real substitute for simply plugging it in and giving it a try both ways.

That's including shipment from California . In my experience it takes roughly 5-10 business days to arrive. This is the one I bought for 4$ http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
Spread the gospel, monster cable must be destroyed!

1 more recommendation for mono cable. HDMI cable for $6 (plus $5 shipping + 2 week wait) vs $65 for Xbox HDMI cable

And really..how big of a TV to you need before you notice the difference between 1080p and 1440p? What like 70"?
P.S. I only ever buy cables from monoprice. They rock!

By the time 1440p+ or higher becomes standard, you'll be able to buy cheap cables for it from monoprice anyway.

^^ That is correct. However all the cool kids are mounting their TVs on the wall, so it might be handy to not have to worry about running the cable through again.

I don't buy all my cables from Monoprice, but most. If I can find something relatively the same price locally, I'll get it and not suffer the waiting period for shipment. I find it takes me 2-3 weeks before I get my order. In fairness I don't live in Calgary but in Sydney NS so there's a delay factor there as well.
Actually the last HDMI cable I got was a 6 foot Belkin being cleared out at the Source by CC for $29.99. Couldn't really go wrong, however the Monoprice one appears to be a better cable (much thicker and sturdier anyway).
