I heard on the news that a truck that matching the one the crashed was seen speeding and driving dangerous on the way to the accident

I feel, and have for a long time, the big-rigs, dump trucks etc, need to be governed, like they are in Europe, it worries me when I can be doing 130 -140 on the Deerfoot and I get passed by big-rig

"From what witnesses tell us, it was a red light for the northbound traffic coming in," he said. "The car had stopped and the cement truck did not negotiate the stop and hit this vehicle from behind."

The truck had so much momentum it carried the vehicle forward for another 300 metres.

Wow. People continue to get behind the wheel and have absolutely no idea of what kind of harm they can cause. I don't get how you can see people being killed in motor vehicle accidents on a daily basis right here in this very city and still not get that message. People aren't paying attention. And and entire family was lost tonight because of it?

I don't even want to get behind the wheel anymore because the next time I do I could be dead.

Horrible accident. Some of the details are just sickening. More from CPS...

Quote:
A total of 5 occupants were in the Chrysler Intrepid all of
which were pronounced deceased at the scene:

Male Driver (41 years)

Female Passenger (33 years)

3 children; all properly restrained in the back seat (6
year old girl / 9 year old girl / 16 month old baby boy)
.
Quote:
The 50 year old male driver of the cement truck was
uninjured in the collision. The driver of the cement truck
was arrested and has been charged with the following Criminal
Code offenses:

Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample; and

5 counts of Dangerous Operation of a Motor vehicle
causing death.

Excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in
the collision.

Reading that just made my stomach turn, that s.o.b should be drawn and quartered. I live in Chaparral, and negotiate that intersection on a daily basis, no need for this, as the sightlines are fine and the lights have flashers indicating a red light.

Well, sounds like this guy had been drinking but that doesn't even have to be a factor in most accidents like this. I think we've had 12 fatalities in the last two summers on one stretch of 2-lane highway near here. The scenario in each case was little helpless cars stopped at construction areas with a flagman waiting to be let through...big rig not paying attention barrells right into them at full speed. Inexcusable.

Even more inexcusable if the driver had been drinking which would seem to be the case with your crash.

Horrible accident.

Brutal. Canadian justice will fark this one up, im sure.
I drove through the scene last night about 10, on the way home from a Christmas Party in the city.

Didn't know at the time what had happened but it looked like it must have been spectacular with wreckage scattered for a long ways, almost a quarter-mile, along the north bound lanes.

Sad.

absolutely horrible. a family of 5 all die, because of one idiot. Then of course the guy who is in the wrong, walks away fine.

I don't understand why some people continue to believe that it is acceptable to drink and drive. It's not because we're worried about the idiots out there who want to do it, the truck driver deserved to die. If I had my way he would be charged with 5 counts of murder. In my eyes that man is a selfish murderer. He should have crashed into a light pole, or over a bridge. He doesn't have the right to take anyone else's life, let alone 5 people, because he has no judgement.

I hope he is haunted everyday for the rest of his life by his stupid act. I can't imagine getting a call from police saying that 5 of my family members were all killed because of a drunk driver. My heart goes out to the family.

Hopefully we don't see anymore incidents like this. Absolutely sickening.

I'm sure the guy had no intentions of killing anyone, and he likely will live with horrible regret for the rest of his life.
Sad thing all around.

Intention? He was charged with drinking and driving, and he was in a mixer moving at a high rate of speed. To me, intention doesn't matter here.

I always find it sad that the idiots always seem to survive these things while the victims die.

I think they should up the charges to vehicular manslaughter x 5 charges + driving under the influence.

Of course here in Canada he'll get three months, cry that he needs his drivers license to work and get that back.

The sad thing is that people will continue to speed and drink and drive thinking its okay or not even caring at all... the tragic loss of 5 innocent lives will soon be forgotten and society will go on until more innocent lives are taken. This isn't the first and won't be the last. Speeders and drunk drivers suck.

RIP.

Sad story. Hope the driver of the truck gets dealt with harshly if he is found responsibe/guilty. Sadly this event probably won't deter others from drinking and driving this holiday season.

IMO, drunk driving causing death should be Murder 1.

You are basically planning to kill someone.

Anyone who gets a DUI should have their license taken away for 2 years. After 2 years of public transit nobody would touch alcohol and get behind the wheel again.

As for DUI who kill or injure others? Same penalty as if you had done it with a bat instead of a car.

While I'm on a rant - how about if we start transporting goods by rail instead of so many big rigs? Those huge trucks are a massive hazard - you can't see around them, they can't stop, and people behave like dicks around them all the time. I can't count how many times I have been forced to drive next to a transport trailer and I am just praying that the driver can see me, because I have no place to go if he decides to change lanes.

Default Macleod Trail Cement Trucks

This is by my house and my wife and I have been cut off numerous times by the cement trucks - even to the point where I have followed them down to the Lafarge pit to let them know my thoughts! Calgary police do not care - they are more concerned about sitting under the 22X overpass and catching people speeding coming off of the highway at 110 kph on a 3 lane highway.

I'm all in favour of how they do it some other countries. First Offense, no license for 2 years. Second offense, no chance to ever get your driver's license again.

If you drive a truck like that, the first offense should never let you drive that kind of vehicle again. And the legal limit should be 0 while driving a truck like that as well.

Honestly, this seems like an accident of the worst kind, but it doesnt meant that the truck driver has to be burned at the stake.
I agree, and honestly. Unless you're in an armored Hummer getting hit my a CEMENT truck would likely kill everyone in the car regardless of speed.

The truck driver is probably wishing he was dead himself after this. I doubt he woke up this morning thinking "I'm gonna kill me a family today!"

edit: I read above Alcohol was a factor.. This guy should spend the rest of his life in prison.

if he was drunk, i don't care if he feels bad and wishes he was dead. he isn't and five people who wern't driving drunk are dead. drinking and driving is not a mistake, eventually you are going to kill people.
